How to increase audio level for clip

Post by Colin_McLeay »

Hello,

I use VideoStudio 10 to edit video clips I employ for teaching. For example, I will record a documentary from television, use VS10 to edit out the material I do not want, and use the subsequent (truncated) clip when I am teaching/lecturing students at the university where I work. (As I use only parts of what is screened on television, and as I work in an educational institution, copyright issues are covered.)

I have a clip I wish to use but the audio is very low. That is, when it is played the volume has to be turned right up on external speakers to be able to hear what is being said with any clarity.

I am wanting, therefore, to boost the audio volume for the whole clip (so that the speakers can be down lower and the volume can be higher.)

I have looked at other topics and have read about the 'rubber band' option, but this seems to focus more on changing volume at different points in a clip rather than doing an across-the-board audio increase. I have also looked at the Audio -> Surround Sound Mixer tabs; while I can adjust the stereo volume up to +12.0, which increases the volume as I play the clip in VS10, I am not clear as to how to save/imbed this change in the clip.

Any and all suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

With thanks,

In the 'EDIT' step put the clip in the timeline and click on it to select it - now look to the 'Options Panel' (above the right hand end of the timeline in the standard interface) - under the 'clip duration' box you will see an oblong box with a loudspeaker symbol at the left end - next to that is a box containing a number (usually 100 by default) then up and down arrows, and finally a down arrow with a line under it.

The 100 represents the percentage of the clips normal volume - if you only want to make small changes click the up/down arrows to raise lower that number - if you want to make bigger changes click the down arrow with a line under it and a slider will appear - move this slider with your mouse to make adjustments to the clips volume.

As with most options in VS you do not need a specific save operation as long as you save your project file (.vsp) or render out the clip again to incorporate the change

Incidentally the stepped blocks to the right of the volume control select fade in and fade out for the volume of the selected clip.

Are you able to increase the volume during recording?
Your PC's audio settings should have a control for playback and a control for recording.

Just to add to Brians comments you can also highlight the default 100 and type in your setting say 300.
