Putting Only Audio on a DVD

Post by nt88498 »

Does anyone know if I can put audio files only onto a DVD and it play in a CD player? If so, how many hours and what settings would I need in VS9 to get this to work.

Someone has asked me to transfer 6 hours of videocassettes into a music CD but I didn't think 6 hours would fit onto a CD so thought maybe it would work if I put it onto a DVD.

Also would mp3 or wav files be better?

Can anyone help?

Thank you very much,
Susan

Susan,

CD_Players will not read a dvd.

Many DVD_Players will play CD's.

You can't make a dvd and play it in your car's CD player because
CD players only play CD's.

Many manufacturers are now offering a dvd player for cars now.
Depending on the type of dvd player installed you can use
the "BURN-NOW" ulead software to create a DVD-Video disk that
contains audio tracks. This isn't a Dvd-audio disk. They are special
and wouldn't recommend burning them.

The amount of audio you can put on a dvd is many hours if you
use dolby audio (the most compatible).

Hope this helps,

Thank you.

I guess I'll have to use a CD then. You said I can fit a lot of audio onto a CD if it is Dolby. Ok, if I import the audio into VS9, how do I go about converting it to Dolby? I know how to create an audio file, however, I think that converts it to a WAV file. How do I do Dolby?

Also, I recently bought MovieFactory 4, but have not had the chance to even open the box yet. Is there software in there that would change to audio to Dolby?

You misunderstood maddrummer... You cannot put Dolby (aka AC3) on an audio CD. Errr... Well, you can put any "data" you want on a CD, but it won't play in your CD player. :(

Of course, you can Dolby on a DVD and play it in a DVD player. DVD audio is very flexible, but some audio formats are standard, and some are not. Enough DVD talk... I'll assume you're going to use CDs.

CD audio is not 'flexible" at all. The original spec allowed for up to 74 minutes, but they figured-out they could add a few more "grooves" and now 80 minute CDs are common.

If you want to play the CD on a regular 'ol CD player, you can only go 80 minutes.

The ONLY standard CD format is PCM 44.1kHz stereo. A "mono" CD has identical left & right channels. A Dolby surround CD has the "analog" surround information encoded in the left & right channels just like a VHS tape. Wave files use PCM too, but the number of channels can vary and the sample rate (kHz) can vary. When PCM is used on a DVD, they call it LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) just to confuse you...

I think you'll have to use Movie Factory to make a CD. I don't think Video Studio can do it... But, I'm not sure about that...I've never used a Ulead program to make a CD.

Wait a minute! There's another option.

I've put audiobooks on CD, turning the original .WAV tracks into .mp3 tracks. A six-tape book turns into a single .mp3-CD that plays for hours and hours.

I rented a car two years ago that had an mp3-playing CD player, factory-installed. So I could have inserted this audiobook -- or an mp3 music CD -- and played it for hours.

That must be what nt88498 is looking for.

Hello nt88498,

Unfortunately DVD and CD audio isn't the same.

If you want to make an audio dvd then use "Dolby Audio".
If you want to make an audio CD then use "pcm" audio.
All commercial CD's are "Pcm" audio.
With "Pcm" audio on a CD you can get about 80 minutes.

*But, if your home dvd player will play the MP3 file format then
you can get much much more audio on the CD. These CD's don't
play in your cars CD player usually.
This is the same as the MP3 players you see advertised in the stores.

If you have bought MF4 see if on the opening screen it has the option's
to create an audio CD. I bought the full version of MF4 which can with
the "Burn-Now" program. Using the "Burn-Now" program you can create
both of the CD formats (The regular format and the MP3 format).

Also, if you didn't itstall MF4 then read through the MF4 posts and
make sure not to load one or more of the programs. They may affect
your systems performance and conflict with other software.
If they are installed you can un-install them from the add/remove icon
in the windows control panel.

The "Burn-Now" program can make a 80 minute regular CD or
a mpg3 audio Cd that will contain many audio files and provide alot
of music.

The instructions on how to do that is in the PDF files that come with
MF4 and also on the ulead website (tutorials).

VideoStudio 9 is more for video editing

Hope this helps,
