Different size film on new laptop - Please Help

Post by andyfranks »

Hi there,

Please help - I'm not very technical and I have an issue with ULead Video Studio 11 Plus on my new laptop.

I have a bought a new HP laptop with Windows 7 Professional. However, I am getting a discrepancy with editing on it between that and the Dell laptop with XP I was using previously.

Let's say I have an 16:9 AVI file I want to import, edit in Studio Plus and then output as another AVI file. Both computers play the original file the same and it fills the entire screen when you play it in Windows Media Player in full screen mode - there is a frame around but no big black border.

You can import it and edit on both but when you click on Share and Save as an AVI file the results are very different. On the old laptop the output file again fills the whole screen. On the new HP computer, though, the new file is eight times the file size compared to the Dell but the picture image itself is smaller and surrounded by a big black border. The actual settings to Share it were the same though, and the size of both was set to frame width 720 x height 576. I haven't done anything differently in VideoStudio.

The same thing seems to happen even when I use Virtual Computer and XP mode on the new HP, so it doesn't seem to be a Windows 7 issue.

The original footage AVIs I have tried are either 1) filmed on a Sony A1 camcorder and then captured using VideoStudio on the Dell 2) filmed on a JVC camcorder which uses its own MPEG format but then converted to AVI using the CyberLink software provided with the camcorder. For 2), the result is the same on both laptops - I am able to use the CyberLink software to create a fullscreen AVI on both computers. Both computers also play the captured Sony footage as full screen AVIs (they were all captured on the Dell using VideoStudio, I haven't tried capturing Sony footage on the HP) no problem. The difference comes when you import them into VideoPlus for editing and then export as an AVI, as I say.

I have filled in the technical spec of the computer (motherboard etc) - I hope that's enough info.

Please help. I'm worried the two computers aren't going to work well together and I won't be able to finish editing a film on the new computer etc. My mobile is 07870 878633, very happy to call anyone straight back.

Let me know if you need any more info.

Many thanks, Andy
Trevor Andrew

Hi Andy

Make sure your aspect ratio’s are correct,
Some things for you to check, and or adjust.

1 / Right click one of your video files, select properties, note the aspect ratio 4:3 or 16:9

2 / Go to File Project Properties-Edit-change the project properties to match your video file.

3 / Go to File Preferences-tick-Show messages when inserting first clip.
From a new project insert a video file-you should get a pop-up window asking to change the project properties. Select OK Yes.

4 / IF you do find the project properties do not match the video file then you can change the default aspect from the start/splash screen, activate this from File Preferences-Show start up screen.

Thanks Trevor - can't seem to crack it though. If you can give me a call tomorrow that would be great? Or if not, any other suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Andy

Are the screen aspect rations and pixel dimensions on the two laptops the same? If not, that could be part of the problem.

Actually I do seem to be getting there, changing the settings you mentioned - thanks for your help. Andy.

Hi Andy

Sorry I cannot return your call, I am just a forum user just like you, there are no members of this forum that work for Corel, we are hear because we are interested in video and I suppose like helping others. Knowing your location may help though, I am in the UK. You can set yours via your profile.

You haven’t commented on the settings you discovered when viewing the various property options.

If the black borders are part of the video file then you need to identify this.

Go to File Preferences and change the background colour to another, green will do fine.
Now view your video in the overlay track, your video will show in the centre, does it have black borders.?

Windows 7
Have you applied the relevant patches for VS 11
