This isn't strictly a VS X3 question but you guys evidently also know what you are talking about in the wider context! And Panasonic are having problems getting me registered, so are unable to answer questions at the moment.
Why does the Panasonic HDC-HS700 suggest having a card as well as a 240GB hard drive? Do cards do something that hard disks don't?

I think the SD card is for somewhwere to store any stills you may shoot while you are filming
