Convert from 4:3 to 16:9 after capture
Folks.....I'm sure this question has been asked before, but if yes I can not find the answer via a search. Thus, is there a way to convert a wide screen event which was captured from a letterbox screen TV signal into a file with the correct aspect (16:9) ? Thanks....RDK45

Re: Convert from 4:3 to 16:9 after capture
Some more details please...
How did you capture this video off the TV? Was it a TV capture card on a PC...a DVD recorder or PVR?
What do the video properties say when you right click the video in the timeline?
It is possible to mimick 16:9 but fiddly and not in a true conversion way.

Re: Convert from 4:3 to 16:9 after capture
Once you have the clip in the timeline, select it, go to attributes and select "distort clip". Then pull the handles on the edges to make the clip have a 16:9 aspect ratio. If it was originally filmed in 4:3 it will result in a distortion though. You can get rid of the upper and lower "black panes" by moving the entire clip down until the edge of the visible image contacts the bottom of the screen, then use the upper handle to stretch it vertically. Keep on doing that until the image covers the entire screen (you will likely have to temporarily move the bottom part of the image off screen to do this).
The software is not intelligent and can't recognize that the original clip was 16:9 footage fitted into 4:3 format, it will think that it is just 4:3 and the black panes above and below are part of the video. You will have to do the adjustments manually using distort clip until it fits the screen the way you want it to.

Re: Convert from 4:3 to 16:9 after capture
Thanks for the replies. The source is a VCR tape of a wide screen event broadcast on normal 4:3 TV letterbox format.
I thought I tried the Distort filter and it didn't seem to give me the option of only bracketing the wide screen image. No matter what I tried the letterbox image was just reduced keeping the black top and bottom areas. I'll try again.
I thought that something like Pan&Zoom might work but that also would not let me select only the wide screen part of the screen image.
Thanks again.....RDK

Jeff (Black Lab) has a very nice way of doing this. He has instructions and an example posted in our Member's Sample forum..

Hi
And if your still struggling try this option:-
http://www.lata.me.uk/video_studio/16_9/16_9.htm
It was written for VS 10 but is still relevant for all versions
