X2 Pro - Changing Overlay Track Transitions

Post by blplhp »

Regarding X2 Pro, the only way I see to create a transition on the Overlay Track is to overlap two video clips…….the length of the overlap being the duration of the transition. Then X2 automatically inserts my default transition that I have set up from Preferences. This works just fine. Is there another way to create a transition in the Overlay Track?

Now here is my issue. If I don’t like the default transition and I want to put another transition between two overlay clips, I delete the default one (creating a blank space between the two overlay clips) and then I click and drag a different one from the Library. However, when I then play the "project" in the Preview Window, the new overlay transition plays on the main video clip on the Main Track, and does NOT play in the overlay track. Is this a common problem with X2 or am I doing something wrong? Is there a work around for this?

Thanks,
Cheers,

Bryan P.

Hi

Do not delete the transition............
Drag a different transition over the one you want to replace.

Edited

The transition is applied to the full frame and not the individual image/clip

First of all, when you delete the transition there should be no space between the clips. In order to transition they must be adjacent to each other, and the transition overlaps them.

Using X2 I put the sample clip SS_Our Baby_Start on the main track. On the overlay track I put SS_General02_End and HM_General06_Start, keeping them at their default size so I could still see the clip in the main track. I deleted the default transition and inserted the Twist Clock transition. Everything works fine for me, with the transition clearly working between the 2 clips on the overlay track.

Tevor is correct, if your overlay track is set to Fit to Screen, then the transition will fill the screen.

Thanks, Jeff.

My Overlay Track is NOT set to Fit-to-Screen. I have my sample overlay flying in from the lower left corner, anchoring to the upper right corner, then it's suppose to transition into another overlay clip that lasts for 5 seconds and then fade out. My transition effect between the two overlay clips is set for 1 second. When I said there was a space between the overlay clips when deleting the default transition, I meant to say that there is a black void in the "overlap" area of the two overlay clips. The two clips are still overlapped by 1 second of time (the duration of the transition). Deleting the default transition just left a "black space" there. When I drag a new transition into that black space, and then play the "Project" in the Preview Window, the transition plays in the full screen, not in the smaller overlay clip. It works fine when playing the default transition that X2 automatically inserts initially, but when I change it by deleting and reinserting the new one, it messes up. If Trevor is saying that I should just drag a new transition and drop it "over" the default transition (without deleting it first), and that will solve the problem.....I'll try that tonight and see if it works.

And don't the two overlay clips have to be overlapping each other to get the transition effect to appear? When I place two clips side by side, I can't figure out how to get a transition effect to get inserted between them. Overlapping them seems to automatically create the space for a transition. In other words, overlay clip #1 begins at 10.0 sec. on the timeline and ends at 15.0 sec. on the timeline (5 sec. clip). Overlay clip #2 begins at 14.0 sec. and ends at 19.0 (5 sec. clip). That 1 sec. overlap between 14.0 and 15.0 creates the "space" for the transition effect to be automatically inserted on the Overlay Track by X2. Are you saying that if I move the start of overlay clip #2 to the 15.0 sec. mark (adjacent and touching the edge of overlay clip #1), I can drop a transition in between them from the Library? As long as they are side-by-side on the same time mark, it will work?

Thanks,
Cheers,

Bryan P.

Hi

The transition is applied to the Full Frame and not the individual image/clip.
At least that’s what I thought, some, alot I must admit look ok.

If you use Cross Fade then the result will look as though its applied to the images only, cos you wont see the fade black to black, the effect is still applied to the full frame.
Other effects may look ok, the Build, Clock, Wipe, look ok????? try the Film types, they defiantly roll the border.

You will get the same effect in the top track.

Add two portrait style images to the top track, you should see a border left and right, apply a film transition, it may affect the whole frame not just the image.

I think it has always been like this, I just assumed full frame for all, you learn something every day.

I don’t know why some work and others don’t, I think you will have to be selective.

I’m considering adding all the good ones to the My Favourites, just to see how many there are.

Note:-

If you want to replace a transition, simply drag another over the transition you wish to change. No need to remove/delete first.

If you double click a transition in the library, it will be inserted in the first available space in the top timeline.

Thanks Trevor. i thought the whole point of X2 Pro adding capability of adding transition effects to the Overlay Track, was for the transition to only affect or be applied to the overlay clips that the transition effect sits in between, not have it also apply to the main video clip in the Main Track. That makes no sense. If that's the case, then I'm back to square one from 4 years ago where you have to create a separate vsp project with a transition between two clips, save it as a vsp file, and then load that vsp file on the overlay track of the main working file. :?

Bryan P.

Just to add a little bit more. The same thing happens in VS x3. It makes no difference what you set the default transition to. Some transitions cover the whole screen some just affect the small clips on the overlay track. If you start with a clock traansition and then just drag the crossfade to the overlay track it works fine so that proves it is the different transitions that create the problem not when /or how you select them!

It does make sense if you are doing full-screen cutaways using the overlay track. But has been discovered, some transitions are applied full screen while others are applied to just the overlay regardless of the size (like my previous example). Why? I don't know. So you'll have to pick and choose what best suits your project. Just more of the fun of video editing.
