Hi,
Can I use VS12 for mp4 files (from flip camera). Do I need to convert it to something else before ?

Because you computer specs aren't filled in it is tough to say. Generally, X2 can handle MP4 files. However, if you computer is not powerful enough it might have problems.

Because there are different varieties of mpeg-4 videos out there, you should also install any software which came with the camera, to ensure your computer has the codec associated with the camcorder available for use.

Which Version of VideoStudio 12 are you using Pro or standard? if you can post your version number I will be able to tell which one you have.

You can access your version number by clicking on the "?" at the top right corner of the editor and select "about". Right above the Serial Number you will see a number (e.g. 12.0.98.0)

If you have VideoStudio 12 standard (12.0.106.0 or 12.0.106.1) then you will not be able to edit the MP4 files.

Before you start editing your videos, make sure that you have checked with Dell to see if you have the latest Video Card driver. I checked on the Dell site and I was not able to find the Vostro 3600 but I did find the 3500 that uses an Nvidia card. The latest drivers that were released are:

Release Date: 4/20/2010
Version: 189.90, A00

I would double check on the Dell site to make sure you have the correct and up to date drivers installed.

Next, make sure you have update Direct X. You can run an update tool from Microsoft.com that will scan your system and then download any updates needed for Direct X. Direct X does not get updated in the Windows Updates for some reason, use the link below to be directed to the Microsoft Download page for the tool:

In regards to the flip video camera's I have seen mixed reviews with them working on VideoStudio, here are a few things to try if you have issues bring them in to VS.

01. You must transfer the files using the Flip software, Corel and other software will not transfer the files from what I have seen.
02. To bring them into VideoStudio, you must Launch the program and go into the editor. From there Select File | Insert Media (into Time Line or Library, your choice) and then browse and select the files
03. If you receive an error stating "File Format Mismatch" This means that you do not have the correct codec installed or you need to rename the file extension from .mp4 to .mov

To change the file extension from mp4 to mov you will need to change your "View Folder Options". You can access your the options from the Windows Control Panel. Launch Control Panel | Select Folder Options | Select the View tab | Un-check "Hide extensions for known file types"

Next locate the files you are trying to import and rename the file extension to .mov and then try re-inserting them into VS

In regards to the codec, I have seen a lot of good luck with the K-Lite codec pack, but be warned that it can mess with other videos or video program play back.

04. If you are having issues with VideoStudio crashing, check to see what version of QuickTime Player you have installed. Currently there is a known issue with QuickTime 7.6.6 and that will cause VideoStudio (and other programs from what I have seen) to crash. If you do have the latest version you will need to remove the following programs from Add or Remove Programs:

Apple Application Support, Apple Software Update and QuickTime 7.6.6

Once you have removed the above from your computer you will need to download and install a earlier version of QuickTime, here is the link to download and install QuickTime 7.6. This is a know version to work with VS.

PLEASE Note: Installing an earlier version of QuickTime may cause iTunes to stop working.
