only 1 sound channel when I capture DV video

Post by albipsy »

When I capture DV video from my Sony DV camcorder, I get sound only on the left channel.
When editing the same video DV, but captured with another software, ie Pinnacle Video Studio (horrosco referens) I get sound on the two channels.
Am I sentenced to capture video DV with Pinnacle and edit files with Ulead ?

DV is a digital transfer, and not really a capture operation where signals are interpreted.

This assumes that you are saving as a DV AVI file -- if you are transcoding on-the-fly (to MPEG2 format, for instance), this doesn't apply. Can you explain in detail what you are doing?

check if your camcorder is set to record 12-bit 32khz or 16-bit 48khz audio. My Sony default was 32khz, and I changed it to 48khz (I don't need to dub in a separet stereo track that the 12-bit 32khz setting lets you do).

Actually, it just occurred to me that this could be one of the Sonys with 5.1 surround sound. That's not supported by UVS as far as I know, nor is it part of DV25.

Be interesting if it is one of those models.

It is on 16bit, and the sound was registred through an external microphone.

I just save as a DV AVI file. Tonight, I have saved it in one file with Pinnacle, then I have split the 32 min file in scenes within Ulead Video Studio. It works, but is a bit disapointing not to be able to save my video as an DV AVI file directely with Ulead Video Studio 9 capture device.

Is that a stereo microphone? If not (like lavaliers and shotgun microphones), only one audio channel would have been used in the DV recording. It's possible that Pinnacle expands the audio into both channels if one has no signal.

Try using WinDV to capture a short segment of video -- it's a nice little capture/output utility for DV devices, and it doesn't alter the content at all. Play the resulting AVI file to see if it plays in stereo, and also check the file properties using UVS.

This is my first post, although Iv'e been following for a long time. I had the exact same problem with my dv capture, sony, shotgun mic. Had to go into audio UV9 and set to copy left audio to right to get audio out of both speakers. It worked fine but sounded rather "tinny". No problem if I dont use the shotgun mic.

I don't understand why "Sony" would make a camcorder with 5.1 audio
for people making home movies.
Doesn't make sense to me unless they are trying to get more people to
use their line of Sony products for video editing/dvd creation that does
handle 5.1 sound.

When you buy these new "Sony" camcorders you install the USB
driver BEFORE plugging the camcorder into the computer.

From that point on when you plug the camcorder into the computer
the unit will showup as another drive letter. Just like a flash disk.
You can also use the camcorder as a dvd writer.

To import the -VR or video dvd from the camcorder you simply goto the
option for VS8-9 to import video/-VR disk, point to the drive letter and
import the video.

Nice! Except if it's 5.1 sound.

My sony is a DCR-HC42 and it is not 5.1. THoff, the mic I used is a sony gun/zoom mic. Would this mic only record one channel? Sony makes a Surround/Stereo mic that is compatable with this camera. Would that record both channels?

THoff or George w. do you know this answer.

I have a Sony gun/zoom mic that I use with my DCR-TRV11E, and it doesn't exhibit this problem. Probably writes the same audio onto both channels, but the sound is balanced.
