Hi, I just loaded VS9 with no apparent probs, but everytime I try and capture anything the picture appears to be broken up into large blocks, not like poor quality capture but as if you are looking through a kaleidoscope.
My project properties are:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
I've tried the "Format" on the Capture screen as "MPEG" or "DV". What should it be?
The odd thing is whenever I try to begin the capture the "Information" section at the bottom shows the video settings as 720x480 NTSC!!
My PC is an Intel 3.2Ghz with 1GbRAM and 220Gb disk free.
Camcorder is a Canon MV20 (Elura in the US I think)
Help me please it's driving me mad. It must be a simple setting, but I can't find it.
Thanks.

I'm using Firewire and have changed my "Project properties" to:
PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
Uncompressed
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Format is set to "DV"
but the info section still shows the NTSC 720x480 setting and under "options" "Capture options" the "frame rate" is set to 29.970 !
I managed to get the info section to show 720x576 PAL a minute ago but that was by having the camcorder playing and then changing the "capture options",the format was set to "MPEG" but it was still at a frame rate of 29.970. this looks like the problem.
Thanks for your quick response THoff

Hi Artgar
These symptoms sound like a mismatch Pal – Ntsc.
But it does not sound as though you are capturing via Firewire to Dv-Avi.
When capturing from a digital cam corder to Dv-Avi via Firewire you are actually copying the video to your pc.
The process does not need any re-coding unlike capturing to Mpeg etc.
What you have on your camera is what you get.
When you connect your camera you normally get an info message (found new device do you want to use-or something like that)
Do you see that?
The Source box should have your camera identified. (canon)
Select Dv or Avi from the Format Box
(if you select Avi the format should revert to show Dv, this is normal)
Does it do that?
Make sure you have DV in the Format Box
When you select ‘Options Cog’ you should only have two choices
1 / Capture options
2 / Dv-Type-----(select Type-1)
There is very little to change within Dv-Avi capture options as you are copying the info from your camera, what you have is what you get.
You should be able to control your camera from the controls below the preview screen using your mouse.
Can you do that?
The information window should now show the properties of your camera footage and should be Dv-Avi.
If the info shows NTSC then your camera is set to NTSC.
The file size for Dv-Avi ia about 13 Gb per hour.
Hope this Helps

Hi trevor andrew,
I think I've found the problem arrgh!
There looks to be a problem with the Canon MV20 and XP SP2's MSDV.SYS file.
There are various suggestions about rolling back this particular file to the one from SP1 and that Microsoft are looking to provide a hotfix, so I'm stuck. Mess around with system files or grow old waiting for a hotfix for my camera.
Yours despondently,
artgar
UPDATE - Just found what looks like the hotfix(article 893008) on Microsoft's website!! Can't wait to get home and give it a go. I'll post what happens. Wish me luck!
UPDATE - All sorted. Working perfectly now. Thanks for your suggestions.
