Convert Step Got Problems Error

Post by j_rs »

I have tried Corel DVD MovieFactory 7 and I really want to buy the full product. However, I am getting an error entitled "convert step got problems", when authoring long length movies. This dvd creating software is the best I've used so far and movies come out perfect for me when I create them using Corel, but if the movie is over about 2 and a half hours long, when I click burn i get the error "convert step got problems". I am guessing the chapters have something to do with it too; If I put no chapters, I don't get the error at the beginning but I still get an error about half-way through the process, either way I can't create long length movies like Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter or any movie about 3 hours long.
If this problem is fixed in the next version I would definitely throw away my Nero CD and buy Corel Movie Factory.

For the next Movie Factory version I would like:
1. To see the above problem fixed.
2. To add more than one subtitle files per movie (so that the movie can be viewed with different languages)
3. To use more video formats e.g MKV
4. To have a menu display duration over 30 seconds.

...movies like Lord Of The Rings...
Of course do you mean movies like Lord Of The Rings, since we don't discuss cracking copy protection or violating copyrights here. ;)

I suspect this truly is a conversion problem. What format are you converting from? The length shouldn't be a problem as long as you use a low-enough bitrate* so the files fit on the disc. For problem formats/files, I use SUPER to make a DVD-compatible MPEG-2 file. (SUPER offeres lots of formats/options, so to make sure your'e using DVD-compatible settings, you can copy the settings from Movie Factory.) Or Nero may be able to make the conversion, depending on your version of Nero.

Even if your file is already MPEG-2, it sometimes helps to re-encode it... Ideally, you should avoid re-encoding because it can degrade quality, but sometimes you dont have a choice.

Nor should the chapters be a problem. A chapter is simply a "place", or marker in the file. It's more likely that it's a problem with the menu. Are you using a motion-menu? Again, the conversion of the background video for a menu can cause problems, depending what you're converting from...
If this problem is fixed in the next version I would definitely throw away my Nero CD and buy Corel Movie Factory.
You can never have too many tools! :)
For the next Movie Factory version I would like:
1. To see the above problem fixed.
2. To add more than one subtitle files per movie (so that the movie can be viewed with different languages)
3. To use more video formats e.g MKV
4. To have a menu display duration over 30 seconds.
For more advanced features, try DVD Styler (FREE - open source), DVD-Lab ($100 - $250 USD), or Wikipedia has a List Of DVD Authoring Applications. The more advanced programs are generally more difficult to use than Movie Factory, and for MKV you might need a 3rd party encoder/transcoder (ike SUPER, etc.). i.e. DVD-Lab doesn't include any encoders.

* 3 hours is a lot if you're using single-layer DVDs. You can make it fit, but at the required low bitrates you may not be satisfied with the quality.

Thanks for the info; very informative :D . You were right its was the bitrate in Corel that needed adjusting. It was just that the error message was so vague, I did not understand what was wrong. Thanks for clarifying the whole process for me. I also really appreciate the list from wikipedia, it will help me decide which programs to buy.
