That box on the right Is fro adding a texture to a colour thats a semi transparent effect that probably don't want You have to check the texture box at the top to make it active. What you want Is a Patern fill of crumpled paper. I bet a little light just appeared over your head. chose the fill tool in the materials pallet chose pattern and click the right edge of the pattern. There is a little arrow head but you may find it hard to see. Now you can select crumpled paper if you have it. I don't I only have a texture for crumple paper so what to do.
Flood fill your image with whit or whatever paper colour you want Don't have the texture checked just plain coloured paper. Now go to Effects > Texture Effects > Textures their you can chose the crumpled paper texture and adjust how high you want and also the scale to get just the effect you want

Re: Materials Palette/flood fill back ground
Followed the above advice but it did not work—I am not doing something right here. This was my workflow
1 select flood fill tool
2 clicked the top foreground +stroke prop box in mat. pal
3 “ “ drop down arrow next to the box on the right of mat.prop box
4 selected crumpled paper OK
5 unchecked texture OK
6 went to effects—text effects---texture
7 in texture box via drop down arrow selected crumpled paper OK
8 clicked on erased background of image with flood fill tool and the previous selected marble
pattern filled the image instead of crumpled paper.
So where am I going wrong

Re: Materials Palette/flood fill back ground
You will want a background colour first. I suggest white. With that layer active do Effects Texture Effect Texture Select the crumpled paper click OK and your white background now has a white crumpled paper effect.
That was method one. You mixed Two ways together. The other is to set white as the flood fill colour and check texture with crumpled paper as the texture then flood fill the background layer.
The strength of the effect will depend on the colour used Darker colours are not as pronounced and The Texture effects texture will give more control then the simple Fill.
Just remember its a texture effect your adding Not a Crumple paper pattern But you could save a small plain image with the effect on it as a pattern should you which But Use the effects , image effects. Seamless tilling first before you save it to get a pattern that does not show the repeats or joints.
