I had some old VideoStudio CDs: version 6 and 8. I tried them out. In the version 8 video capture options, it has DVD and SVCD greyed out.
However one can set up a custom format like SVCD up to 6 Mb/s. However it is only MPEG1. It would play back in WMP and VLC, and
even a cheap DVB-T set top box, but crashes Cyberlink PowerDVD.
Now I wonder why DVD option is there but not selectable. If I had MPGE2 codec installed, will it detect that and allow me to
capture in MPEG2 format?
can I add MPEG2 codec to VideoStudio 8?

Re: can I add MPEG2 codec to VideoStudio 8?
The full version of VS 8 could definitely burn DVDs and came with an mpeg-2 codec. The fact that yours is grayed out indicates that you have an SE version. In those days, many of the SE versions of SE allowed only VCDs to be burned. If it allowed DVDs, it would be labelled something like Video Studio 8 SE DVD.
I doubt that adding an mpeg-2 codec would allow it to burn a DVD since the programming itself was crippled -- which is the meaning of SE...

What are you "capturing" from? What hardware? What format?
Typically, you can capture in one format and convert/save to another.
What operating system do you have? (VS 8 was not designed to run on Vista or Win7).
I think all versions of Video Studio could edit or create MPEG-2 files, even if your version doesn't allow you to author/burn a DVD. To make a proper video-DVD, it's not enough to simply make an MPEG-2 file. You need a DVD authoring application to make the proper DVD structure with AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS folders, VOB files, etc.
The current version of Video Studio includes Corel Movie Factory for authoring/burning DVDs. DVD authoring/burning is a separate step from video editing, and often a different application is used. Wikipedia List Of DVD Authoring Applications

To answer your questions: I am trying to digitise a few dozen VHS tapes. I am using S-video input of a
PCI TV card. The software supplied with the card is rubbish (the sound is not synchronised and poor
quality). I have been trying out various free or demo programs for 3 weeks, and have gotten up to Ulead.
I will worry about burning DVDs later on. For the moment, I can put the MPEG2 files on USB disk and play
them on a digital set-top box, or watch them with something like VLC or PowerDVD.
I have installed VideoStudio 8SE it on Windoze XP SP3.
