I've been well versed in VS9, but upgraded to x3 due to 64 bit win 7. I cant figure this issue nor could I in VS9.
Sometimes while creating a project the pics and video show up not taking up full screen but have a say 20% black border around them. Even when I try to start fresh with a new project, It seems to add clips and photos the same way with a black border like if you were to shrink a pic in an overlay trac. I get around this by selecting an old project where the pics and clips go in full screen mode. Frustrating. I'm dying to know if anyone has experienced this and what the fix is.

Re: full screen view
What are the aspect ratios of your clips? What is the aspect ratio set to for your project? Are you putting these in the main track or the overlay track?

Re: full screen view
I am adding these all to the video trac. The video I do is standard 4:3, The pics are just regular dig camera pics and I keep aspect ratio; however, I dunno if that matters. I can tell if the project is going to be the good full screen or that shrunk border one right from the preview window. I can toggle to any section in the library manager, highlight a clip. or pic or video. Even the default frame, object, video will look 20% smaller around edges. If I close VS then start new project the same thing. So I open up an old one delete all old stuff and use it. Somehow the properties or preferences gotta be different. I can't find it.

Hi Nick
What are your project properties.?
For VS 9
File-Project Properties
For X3
System – Project properties.
I think X3 defaults to using 16:9, whereas VS9 defaulted to 4:3
If they indicate 16:9 then the clips from the library will show a black border.
If they show 4:3 the clips will practically fill the frame.
Go to File Preferences and change the background colour to anything but black.
The frame will now show as coloured.
Read my Quick Guide to 16:9 will explain about the preview screen, and how to change the default ratio.
To fill the frame the minimum image has to be 4:3 ratio 768 x 576px
For 16:9 1024 x 576px (for standard video)
The library video clips are usually Ntsc sizes, probably Wmv, you may see a small border top and bottom when using these clips.
You don’t say whether your Pal or Ntsc
Adding your location to your profile would help.

Re: full screen view
OMG! You my friend are the man. This is exactly the answer I was looking for. I hope you are getting paid by Ulead, Corel I mean. Yep I opened up an old project from VS9 in X3 and it was 4:3. Funny thing now is, I can get my old video camcorder to do 16:9 but not my old camera. You see the delema. 16:9 video on my widescreen fine, Photos stretched, or if I want proper photo aspect, video shrunk. So I'm just keeping everything 4:3 for now. Id rather deal with black bars and keep proper aspect ratio than deal with squished and stretched. Perhaps when I spend bank on a D-90 I'll go everything wide.
TYVM again. I'll be into your how-to tutorials some more

Re: full screen view
Hi Nick
When you add a video to the timeline, if the aspect is incorrect, the video should display in proportion, even though you may see borders.
If you open a project, it should display as created. If it is 4:3 then it should display correctly in X3 as 4:3.
When you say Squished and Squashed do you mean they are smaller but in proportion?
Or do they look distorted?

You don't have to keep the black bars. Hide them! See my tutorial below.Funny thing now is, I can get my old video camcorder to do 16:9 but not my old camera.
