Help fails - displays Web Works error

Post by Mr Rocket »

I cannot seem to get the Help menu item to work at all. Every time I select Help -> Help Topics... I get a dialog box with the following error message: Web Works Help display fail! Any ideas? I've reinstalled PSP twice. And I downloaded the latest update.

There is now a PDF version of the manual that you can download.

Well that's for PSPX3, which is great if that's what Mr. Rocket is using because that error sounds like he's using an older version that relies on the old help system not the web based one. But I could be wrong.

Just to be sure, which version of PSP are you using Mr. Rocket?

I'm using the latest version, 13.2.0.35. But I've had PSP since the good 'ol shareware days! Could it be I have some leftover software that is getting in the way of this version?

The X3 Help is online something , most likly your firewall, is blocking it from opening to the web page.

I just installed Corel PSP X3 today and have the same problem. I added PSP to the firewall exception list but it made no difference. Same error: "Web Works Help display fail!", when I click Help/Help Topics... on the menu.

I'm using IE8 and Javascript is enabled and up to date. If I click "Help/Online Support and Resources..." it opens the Corel support page in IE8 so that link is working.

For problems in general I always try a Windows Update just to make sure a needed file is not missing.

Edit:
I have checked today and all is ok using Corel PSPX3 "Help" with both IE 8.0 and FireFox 3.6.3

I made sure all Win updates had been applied. There were two updates to MS Visual C++, not required before installing PSP, which were installed. I rebooted after the installation to make sure they "took". But, I still get the same error message when trying to access any help on Corel PSP X3.

Hi from a newbie to this forum.
I have been frustrated with the same "Web Works display fail" error after recently purchasing X3. I have frequently checked back here to see if there was any workable solution. I also contacted Corel Support.
I have just received this reply, which may be of help to anyone with the same problem, or maybe my simpler solution mentioned at the end of this post may work...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(From Corel Support)
"You might need to clear your browser cache in Internet Explorer and change its settings to default state. Please follow these steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer 8 (make it a temporary default browser if you're not using this for web browsing).
2. Click Tools, Internet Options.
3. Click the "Delete Files..." button under Browsing history in General tab.
4. In the new window, select Delete all.
5. Under Advanced tab, select 'Restore Advanced Settings' then click Reset button.

Try running again your Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3, then and see if you can access the program Help."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not wanting to loose some of the browser data in IE, I first tried to change my default browser from IE8 to Firefox, to see if that made any difference. YIPPEEEEE ! It worked on the first try :D

Taking a clue from grumpfruttock1, I switched my default browser to FireFox, opened PSP X3 and opened the help and it worked, bringing up help in FireFox. Then I switched the default back to IE 8, closed PSP X3 and reopened it and that worked, too. Now it seems to work in IE 8 consistently. How random!

Glad you had success too, Quixote :D
I also found that it worked perfect in IE8 after reverting back to IE8 as default browser (which I did after posting here), very strange though. I am wondering if under installation it somehow fails to register the default browser in some cases, thus when one tries to access help, it doesn't know where to look, hence the error message.
I guess you're smiling too !
