Help! what happens at 3 mins 58! ghosting?

Post by alexleominster »

I put a little film on youtube which I put together using Corel VideoStudio Pro X3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJNaeZ_3jGU

and someone posted this comment?
"If you look at some of the faster scenes, like the flying eagle (3min 58 and pause the video, you can see two separate images at once, the eagle and a "ghost". This happens whenever something moves fast in the scene"
THing is they are right. the original doesnt do it so whay have I done wrong? I chose mp4 hd as a setting which saves as frame based, but I have also tried a custom save using upper field first and it looks the same. Any ideas?

thanks

Hi

I see a double wing, for want of a better description.
Sometimes I get this with fast motion using my Panasonic GS400.
Its not a high speed camera.

Are you sure its not on the original footage.
View the original frame by frame in video studio.

What camera did you use to record the eagles.

I have footage of gannets that show a similar motion

I’ve just noticed you can see a similar effect when viewing the Red Kite Feeding Station.

Even so, very nice videos.

Trevor,
thanks for the reply.... I just checked and the original is perfect , even if i freeze a frame i get no shadow or ghost wing?????? in fact its miles better.
I tried turning smart render etc off but I still get the ghosting. In fact the ghosting looks ok ish but when you see the original side by side you realise its actually much worse than it shouls be?

Hi

You wont see ghosting on individual frames.
But its a little like the wheel effect.

The wheel looks to be rotating correctly but as it speeds up it seems to run backwards.

The upbeat of the wing is relatively slow then the downbeat is very strong.
You see the wing at the top and moving down, the next frame should be a lower wing, but its that fast that the frame captures the wing higher.

The gannets shaking there heads.
I see the beak going left, the next frame should be further left, but the movement is so fast that it records the beak to the right, I just need a faster camera.

Ok

I will investigate my originals in greater detail and compare them with Youtube. Dificult as you cannot view frame by frame.......
I may have to make a new video with new footage.

Did you see the comment on Red Kites?

And what settings are the original videos, and what settings are you using to upload to Youtube?

Trevor,
This might help your gannets too :) but i think i've cracked something.
if I save in hd wmv theres no ghosting so I looked at why?
the original has a frame rate of variable 16800
the highest corel saves in hd mp4 is 2000
corel saves wmv hd at something like 17000!
so the result on wmv setting is like the original BUT
whichever aspect i choose on wmv 16-9 or 4-3 it doesn't fill the screen on playback
doh!

I would hanker a guess that you are using a camcorder with a CMOS chip. One of the drawbacks of a CMOS chip is the effect called Rolling Shutter. Fast motion is especially susceptible to the rolling shutter effect.

No, nothing to do with the camcorder because the footage un edited is perfect. Its got no artifacts of ghosting in wmv format either.
Unfortunately the wmv format on corel x3 has two options and both come out with a border not full screen...

I might find a way round with saving as m2ts or something but most "custom " options render 90 or 99% then freeze. :x

Hi Alex

Try disabling Non square Pixel Rendering in both Project Properties and the 'Save Window', 'Options' button.
