Old Product - NEW Problem (help needed)

Post by Darrel »

I've had Video Studio 9 on my computer for a few years now. We had to recently reformat my hard drive and reinstall all programs. Long story short, VS9 loaded but when I now try to play any captured or installed sample video the only thing I get now is the sound but not the video. If I stop the file mid way the screen then shows a frozen pic of the video but when I clip play again it's only audio and no video again.

I've never experienced this before and the only technical feedback was that I would need to upgrade to the newest version of VS. VS9 has always been great to me in the past and if this problem is fixable I appreciate any helpful feedback I can get to resolve my problem.

Thanks in advance,

Darrel

First, have you manually updated your reinstallation of XP with the latest version of DirectX? That often corrects problems such as you are experiencing.

Thank you. I just updated and that worked. Here's the next thing I've discovered. I was capturing video from the camcorder and the program recognized my Sony Handy cam for video but my Logitech Pro web cam as the microphone. After capturing some of the video I went back and discovered when I play back the video clip I have video and sound from the Sony but I also have background audio being recorded from the mic on the cam. When I tried to change the mic setup I only get the: Logitech, Integrated Intel Mic, & USB input. Is there a way to change things so only the audio from the Handy cam is used? Also, since I'm asking questions this morning here's one other. When you watch the video playback on the Handy Cam or via the television with the cam plugged in the picture is clean and crisp. When I capture and playback via VS9 the picture isn't crisp and clean; rather, it kind of grainy and pixlated and the end product that is burned to disc is of the same quality.

Any thoughts on these issues are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,

Darrel

Hi

How are you connecting the camera to the pc?
If your camera is a MiniDv type then you should connect via firewire.

What capture ‘format’ are you selecting?

If you are selecting anything other than DV then you have to set the capture properties.
Right click one of your captured clips and select properties what are they?

Audio capture, you should be able to set the capture source via the Options Cogwheel.
But it would be best to simply unplug the Logitech

VS 9 updates, have you applied them?

Trevor, thanks for the input. I'm going to try and attach a screen shot from VS9 to answer your questions.

Hi

Thanks for the info

Your camera is a Mini DV type and as such you should capture using Firewire aka I-Link.
You will see the quality difference, See my guide to DV – Avi from the link below.

If you capture via usb then the video has to be re-coded during capture.
I assume you are making a dvd.
For the format choose DVD
This will capture to Mpeg2 suitable for burning to DVD.
………………………………..

If you capture to Avi, you need to set the capture properties.

Set your capture properties as, this is from memory so may be a little different but should get you through.

Select the Options cogwheel
Choose Video audio Properties
Use software compression
Advanced
Choose Use Video Compression as ‘Microsoft Video 1’

Ok

In file Preferences-Capture-tick show dropped frames

You will be able to see dropped frames during capture in the information panel.
How many should you see? None, one is to many.

For Avi--Your capture settings should be similar to:-

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

For DVD similar to:-

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

Again I advise that you capture using firewire…………..

Thanks so much for all the info. I'll try all suggestions later and will pick up fire wire and let you know how things work out.

Be well,

You need to make sure your computer has a Firewire port. If not, then a Firewire card is cheap these days ($20 or less) and easy to install if you have a free place for it on your motherboard. They usually also come with a cable, though you need to make sure the cable has the right plugs on either end: a bigger 6-pin plug for the computer end and a smaller 4-pin one for the camera.

Hi Darrel

View your device manager to see if IEEE 1394 Bus host Controller is listed.

If yes then you have a firewire port.

Even so you will need a cable, usually 6 to 4 pin

Thanks again for the help. It's nice to find people who are so helpful these days.

Here a new question you might have an answer for. We just purchased a FLIP Video camera, cheap but the water proof case makes it well worth buying,.... nevertheless, after downloading to my computer I see the files are Mp4 files. When I try to upload the video clips I get this message: "Unable to open.... .mp4" File Mismatch (16803:1:3:). Since this is an older version of VS is there something I need to download so that I can upload these mp4 files to my video?

Thanks in advance,

Darrel

I'm afraid that would be VS X3 :)

The older apps were around before these file types existed and you won't get them to work together I'm afraid.

You could convert the mp4 to wmv and use that instead.

Thanks for the info. I downloaded WinFF and it works great.
