Fullscreen preview bug

Post by [Mike] »

Hello there,

I have submitted this bug about two months ago, unfortunately a fix for it did not make it into the "second update" (13.2.0.35), so I decided to see who can reproduce this.

Simply open X3, open a simple image, like a jpeg or something, make a change to it. Make a visible change, so you can catch it in thumbnail view in Windows Explorer. After making the change, go to fullscreen preview, exit fullscreen preview. Then save the image. Close it and save the change or save without closing. I find, that the change does not save!

In fact, every action you do immediately after coming out of fullscreen preview, fails. You have to do the action a second time for it to stick. For example, open a jpeg, fullscreen preview, exit fullscreen preview, then try and resize. No go. Try it a second time, resize works.

When I finally got through to support, I got this as a response: "It will probably require a product update. We will let you know when the issue has been fixed.". A month later I contacted them again and got this at the end: "There is a planned date of release for the patches, which we cannot reveal. However we assure you that our engineers are working on every submitted issues."

Now that we have 13.2.0.35 and this has not been fixed, I think more people need to report this (if they can reproduce it as well of course).

If you just want to post some input here, that's okay as well.

Well not every action needs to be done twice. Painting on the image works right away.

However, following your instructions the changes were saved properly for me. So...I'm only experiencing half of the problems.

I am not able to reproduce this as well, have you tried resetting your work space?

How to reset the workspace:

Launch PaintShop Photo while holding down the shift key, continue to hold the shift key until you receive a message asking if you are sure if you would like to reset the workspace. Select OK and then see if you are able to reproduce the issue.

Steps I took to try and reproduce the issue:

1- Launched PaintShop Photo Pro X3
2- Selected an image from the Organizer (JPEG)
3- Once the image loaded in the full editor I then selected View | Full Screen Preview
4- I closed out of the full screen preview by clicking the left mouse button
5- I then selected Image | Re-size | Lowered the size by 50% using the Pixel Dimensions

The image resized without issue.

I have also repeated the steps above with other tools (e.g. Digital Noise Removal, Sharpness) and still was not able to reproduce.

Did you also try:
Make a change to it, Preview, save?

How do you exit out of the fullscreen preview? Crazy though it may sound I both can control when using the resize does and does not work. But this is probably not consistent.

Steps to create the second error:

1) Open image
2) View->Preview Image Fullscreen
3) Hit the 'Esc' key to exit fullscreen preview mode
4) Resize
5) Resizing should fail

If I hit any key other than 'Esc' the resizing works just like it should.

Initially I was seeing various problems when saving and reloading a jpg after Full Screen preview.

1. The image would save but it went from 133kb to 5 Kb and it was now just a block of one color.
2. The new file failed to reopen (filesize=0) in any viewer .. bad file!

Well, I was using two monitors because I was previously running MS Flight Simulator.
I am also using Wacom Bamboo and Pen set for the Main Monitor.
I was also editing a text file sand saving it on monitor 2 to help track this problem using notepad (multitasking).

So, I went to just my main monitor only.

No more problems!
And my new file size is also larger than the original was.

I have only done limited testing at this point.

Is anyone else running with two displays (monitors) when going to Full Screen in Corel (which only uses one monitor)?

When saving a Jpeg It will use last used Settings Hence difference in Size. The best way is to use File>Export>Jpeg Optimiser. This allows you to examine the effect of compression on the image and tells you the expected file time and download times. In fact i have customised my workspace by adding the JPeg Gif and Png optimiser icons to the standard tool bar.
You can also access from the options button in File save as

I am not sure you understood what I said?

I mentioned:
1. The image would save but it went from 133kb to 5 Kb and it was now just a block of one color.

The picture was not saved.
I had 5kb of a brown block rectangle ... where the picture should have been.
***** While using 2 monitors.

Using just my main monitor (not 2 monitors, # 2 was disabled) all saves ok ....... No problem with using full screen previews and saving files!

I understand you, that's exactly how I encountered this issue in the first place. I was working on a wallpaper, final preview, then I saved it as a new image. The new file was created, but with only a few pixel rows of actual image, the rest was a block of grey, as you would see with a corrupted/uncomplete image.
How do you exit out of the fullscreen preview? Crazy though it may sound I both can control when using the resize does and does not work. But this is probably not consistent.

Great find, it does appear to be the Esc key. I've always exited fullscreen preview with Esc and avoided hitting another key or mouse button in fear of applying "something" to the image (perhaps an irrational fear, but you never know).

But now it gets really interesting, open PSP anew, open an image, hit the Esc key, then try a resize... Didn't work here. So it may not be related to the fullscreen preview at all. It's the Esc key?! Why on earth it would do that, I have no idea. I sure hope it's not by design.

Well what do you know. Yes using the esc key does produce the do it twice. Where as first time i tested I just clicked the image to come out of Full screen preview and that did not cause any problem

Yes, I can reproduce this here too, and agree that it's nothing to do with the Fullscreen preview, and everything to do with use of the ESC key!

To reproduce:
1. Open an image
2. Press ESC
3. Try a resize, it will fail

I haven't tested comprehensively, but actions that take place immediately (e.g. drawing on the image, rotate left / right, mirror, flip etc) appear to work as expected.
Actions that raise a dialogue box to enter further options (e.g. Free rotate, resize, add borders etc) may exhibit the behaviour, but not all. For example, canvas size still seems to work ok despite liberal mashing the ESC key before hand...

Clearly the ESC key is shortcutting code in certain circumstances, and it can leave the application in a funky state.

For example, try this out:
1. Open an image
2. Press ESC
3. Choose Image->Greyscale (you will notice that it doesn't get converted to greyscale)
4. Now use the zoom in/out feature and you will see that the image has been lost.

If you save the image now it will create a truncated image just as Marty discovered...

Hi,
Think I have the same problem. Thought it was something I was doing wrong with save / save as etc.

Some jpg saves seemed to work OK others produced 'grey rectangles' with a file size (e.g. 1129 x 1669 pixels 2.31 kb) whilst others had a kb size but no pixels!!

Having found your forum I realise that all the problem saves were after I used full screen preview and 'esc' to return to the previous screen. (Repeating all the alterations or retrieving an intermediate from Corel auto-preserve and saving without perfoming file preview worked OK.)

Seems there really is a BUG.

I am using the latest patch (V. 13.2.0.35)

Hopefully something can be done about this?

Cheers,
[Mike]

A follow-up, July 14th I reported the above additional findings through the web form. Today I finally got a response.
We will need to fully test this issue before ruling it as a bug. Should it be ruled out as a bug, a report will be sent to the Technical Team. A fix for the problem may be included in the next patch for the program.
And remember, this is after one support representative said to me that she could reproduce what was then still the fullscreen preview bug and that she had forwarded the issue to the dev team. And after another support rep said there were patches coming (SP2) and that every submitted issue was being worked on.

And now this. Some more testing, some more forwarding...

No wait:
Since you have already contacted an agent and has confirmed the bug, most likely the bug has already been reported to our Technical Team. Unfortunately there is no information for disclosure regarding the release of future updates.
Most likely? Methinks they should be able to check... Oh, Corel...
