Crash on Closing

Post by Corelistani »

each and every time i close the program the XP OS puts out this message:

Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

anyone else have this phenomenon? it's not like it's terribly irritating, like everything else about the program, just thought i'd mention it.

Try going to File > Preferences > Reset Preferences and select the options to "Reset dialog positions and last used settings" and "Delete all cache files". Then restart PSP and see if that helps.
You could choose more options there if you like.
Another possibility is to start PSP while holding down the Shift key and clicking "OK" when you see a box asking if you want to reset PSP to its default state.

setting all the Preferences is a pretty daunting task. the extraordinary number of options chosen (this is all new to me...i Was a happy PhotoShop user) reminds me that i'm fiddling with an incredibly complex piece of software i will never fully understand. unfortunately, resetting all my painfully won preferences to the factory's hasn't achieved anything. the situation persists. now i have to retrieve all the settings again. i wonder if i'll learn something new this time?

oh, and the way i've set my WindowsXP up is to single click to open/launch. holding the Shift key whilst i do that does nothing. double clicking that same desktop icon with the Shift key Does do as you suggested. the dialogue that comes up was buried beneath a few windows so i'm glad the programmer thought to chime a bell to get my attention. intuitive? oh i don't think so. this bloody thing is like learning quantum physics.

I've always hated the term "intuitive" when it comes to software. Most people find different designs intuitive so you're both right. I could never find my way around Photoshop without the tutorials I've read and watched, and I hated Elements, to me Paint Shop Pro was the easiest thing to learn to use.

But I suppose that's where we part ways. There's a list of tutorials in the tutorials section if you're having lots of problems learning PSP.

My question here, however, is does Windows give you any indication about the specific error? Is there a file/memory address number in the error dialog?

after sweating blood learning the PS interface i'd become quite expert in the level of features i familiarized myself with. i NEED these features in PSP (now PSPhotoP). without them i'm blind and frustrated since i don't want to have to start from the bottom again. the simplest thing (not necessarily intuitive i agree) is rocket science now (if it exists at all). articulating just what i'm looking for is so firmly ensconsed in the PS world it's injurious to merely begin trying to describe what i need. there should be more mention of functions of PS translated into PSPP processes. looking for tutorials of PSPP when 90% of the artists out there are using PS should indicate a need from our chosen brand maker.

it's the normal "Please tell Microsoft about this problem" error report. "Send Error Report" "Don't Send" are the button options. if i look at what i'm sending MS: "To see what data this error report contains, click here." it says:

Error signature:
AppName: corel paint shop pro photo.exe
AppVer: 13.0.0.1
ModName: mfc90.dll
ModVer: 9.0.30729.1
Offset: 0005d23c

The technical information contained in the report is way too dense for me to understand at all. looks like it's an xml file written as a text file in my C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\ folder as fb1c_appcompat.txt (1520Kb). it's way too long to paste here. just what it's supposed to tell MS is anyone's guess. ya think they appreciate my sending all that data? i'm not sure it'll do them any good since they've moved away from my ancient OS. if you need any other data i can supply you, just ask.

Well mfc90.dll that's part of the VC++ library of functions. Helps make development for windows a little easier. If the error is there you could look into seeing if you can get a more mature version and see if that helps. Though not recommended.

I have heard reports of Python crashing with an error around mfc90.dll so that may be it.

I believe Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows XP so even if they did appreciate it, I doubt it would matter at all.

Are there any commands you're looking at for PSP to PS equivalents? Obviously not all functions will be available. But I might be able to help. The lack of PSP tutorials beyond version 9 lead me to use Photoshop tutorials to learn a lot of what I know about PSP. I might have some options for you. Then again maybe not. :D

Oh I also found this list....it's a bit long and much but it's something. I don't know how complete this list is, or even how up to date but I'd imagine it relates at least up to version X. But it might help as well.

hmmm. i'm assuming the error report tells us that the ModName, in this case, mfc90.dll, is causing the error(?). if that's the case, checking my Add or Remove Programs thingy (is my lack of technical nomenclature showing?) shows me that i have 3 MS Visual C++ installed. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (v 8.0.59193), Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (v8.0.56336), and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (v9.0.30729)

why i have 3, let alone any is anyone's guess. this is a fairly clean OS with only the minimum MS upgrades and patches to SP2. should i remove all of them and install the most recent version? my instincts tell me to remove all of them and see what programs rely on it. the only one of any significance i can think of would be my Blender (which needs Python so it's installed too). i'll Ghost the system before so no worries.

that site looks terrific. i'll have to go over it some more later. not wanting to detract from the initial query i'll see what comes up when i put out another plea in another thread about the PS equivalents.

There are three because different programs were compiled using different versions of the redistributable library. As such when they install they make sure to install their version of the library. Like I said my idea is stupid and highly not recommended as it could damage the requirements of the programs. However, if you're ghosting first then I wish you the best of luck.

hmmm, that's funny. thought i'd killed the bug after i did some housecleaning of the PSPP install. there were a bunch of useless language files in the C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Corel\Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3\ CDS and Lang folders that i deleted. after that i opened and closed it once and no error log came up. the next time it did tho, this is progress!

haven't opened and closed it much since then so i'm not sure it's terminated but i installed the update bringing it to 13.2.0.35 and it seems to be stable so far without any errors. i'm holding my breath and it's still not even doing it. i may get used to this thing yet.
