Player Problem
I frequently rip .iso's using AnyDVD HD, mount them with Virtual Clone Drive and play them with WinDVD. For a long time this worked fine, but now there seems to be some kind of annoying bug. Whenever I try to play .iso's of standard discs (I don't have the problem with blu-rays) in full-screen mode (it works fine if I DON'T go to full-screen) on WinDVD 2010, the display blinks on and off randomly; it will go off and be black for a few seconds, and then come back on perhaps a second later. Depending on the disc, the interval between blinks can be really long (sometimes 20+ seconds) or really short (sometimes every second or so). While I thought this may just be an .iso problem, after recently testing with a physical disc it did the same thing. I once had this problem with a blu-ray disc but discovered that I had my screen resolution set lower than 1920x1080, and once I reset it the blu-ray played fine, so I'm wondering if it isn't some problem with screen resolution?
I really don't even know how to begin to test/solve the problem. I've ripped both protected and unprotected .iso's and there doesn't seem to be a difference. I've shut down every possible application in case it was a problem of interference, but no good. I've used advanced uninstall with Revo Uninstaller, reinstalled, but still didn't work. I've tried messing with the settings on WinDVD in the setup, but nothing I've done seems to make a difference. I can't think of any changes I've made to any of these programs. I tried to download the WinDVD service packs/patches but they said there was no applicable program installed on my computer. The ones I seem to have the most problems with are those of older films, especially in black-and-white, though it's not JUST those since I've had some of new movies do this too.

I was hoping some senior member of the forum would come to your assistance.
This sounds like a stuttering problem. The culprit may be the Duplex Secure application:
http://bit.ly/98kiIB
I would suggest downloading the Duplex Secure installer and running it in uninstall mode:

Hope this helps.

^ OK, I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to do with those links. Where can I download the Duplex Secure installer and how can I run it in uninstall mode?

The 1st link explains the issue. The 2nd link takes you to the Duplex Secure website, where you can download the program. Once downloaded, run the program, and you will have the option to uninstall Duplex Secure.

Re: Player Problem
It says that "No SPTD was detected" and the uninstall button is grayed out... I guess that's not it.

Guess not. Was worth checking.
I wonder whether you would incur stuttering if you played the Blu-ray video from a HDD virtual drive? Assuming you can legally use AnyDVD HD, the steps are as follows:
1) Rip to .iso file preserving the checkmark in front of keep protection.
2) Download and install Virtual CloneDrive: http://bit.ly/zS4p
3) Change the drive letter of the installed virtual drive to V.
4) Right click the V drive in explorer and select mount.
5) Browse to the .iso file and select it.
6) Launch AnyDVD HD, then open Settings > Drives > Selection and place a checkmark in front of Elby CloneDrive.
7) Play the movie with WinDVD Pro 2010.

Re: Player Problem
nepenthe,
I have no problem playing blu-rays either when I play a physical disc in the drive or when I rip them to an .ISO using AnyDVD HD and mounting them to a virtual clone drive. The problem is with STD DVDs that do this "stuttering" both with physical discs and with mounted .ISO images. In fact, I can't tell any difference when it comes to physical disc VS mounting.

Someone more knowledgeable than myself will need to respond. I tossed out a couple of suggestions, but obviously the solution to your glitch lies elsewhere.

Re: Player Problem
Do you know what your display driver version?
Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | Run | Type: dxdiag | Select OK | Select Yes if prompted to check your drivers | Select the Display tab (display 1)
Can you please post the information located in the Direct X diagnostic tool.

Re: Player Problem
The problem is related to how WinDVD Pro switches off the Aero interface. If you click the start menu, right click "Computer" and choose properties, the system tab will open. From there choose "Advanced system settings". This will open the advanced tab. Under "Performance" click the settings button. This will open the visual effects tab in performance options. From here change the settings to "Adjust for best performance", this disables all Aero features. WinDVD Pro will then have no problems playing back any disk or ISO without flickering. Basically I believe WinDVD Pro gets stuck in a cycle of turning Aero off and on. Without Aero features enabled, no issues. Having a high end machine without Aero kinda defeats the purpose of ever upgrading from a previous OS. Hopefully Corel will work this out. The alternate program I am currently using has no issues turning Aero off and on for playback so it is definitely a WinDVD Pro bug.
