Need help with folders

For whatever reason when I use batch convert I cannot use the "save in folder" that I choose. I have to tell the program where I want them saved and it will, but the next time I use the program I have to re-tell it again. I looked into the preferences options but can't seemed to do it. I also have to repeatedly tell it what file type I want to use. Very aggravating.
