PSP x3 crash on DNR

Post by altrego »

While trying to edit photo's and utilize the DNR (digital noise reduction), the program freezes and crashes.

Seems to happen on all types of files and of all sizes.

No error codes. Windows says program isn't responding and closes.

My system is identified in my profile. I can't find any configuration reason this is happening. I'm not running out of memory.

Any suggestions?

Already tried resetting and clearing cache.

For what its worth The only other complaint Re DNR was also running as 64 bit. I dont have a problem with x3 and DNR under 32 bit even on 50mb images. And its near instantaneous

I have the DNR crash problem also. I find that if I use it on the background layer there is no problem, but it will crash the program every time when I use it on any other layer. Win 7 Pro 8GB RAM 1 GB video RAM.

I also noticed that DCNR crashed for me a couple of times the other day :(
I am using Windows 7 64-bit too.

I have now just tested a little further and find it only crashes on a layer other than the background layer.
As I hardly ever use DCNR on such a layer I never noticed it before...

DNR also means "Do Not Resuscitate" which is what seems to be happening.

I did not have this problem with X2 and, if I am not confusing myself, I don't think I had the problem with X3 when I first installed it from a disk (rather than a download) I received as a Christmas present. It seems like I remember using the one step digital noise reduction tool with X3 and not having a problem at first. What I am remembering is that it started happening after installing update 13.2.1.15. However, I did not make a restore point prior to installing the update so the only way I will be able to verify is to uninstall X3 and then use the disk to reinstall as it was originally. When I have some time I will try that and report back - not sure when that will be.

I had a similar problem when I placed Guide Lines on a photo and then went to delete them. The program went into Not Responding mode and I had to shut it down.
I also had the same thing happen when I tried to do some Adjust feature to a photo.
I am new to PSP and it does not leave a good taste.

Hello altrego,

After recreating the problem, my PSP X3 did crash so I tried resettings the workspace and it appears to have fix the problem. To reset the work space, please press and hold down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP X3 icon, when you receive the screen below just click on OK button.

I just did the reset and tried to apply the one step noise reduction to a layer I added to a photo and it immediately crashed and closed.

Here is a list of my actions. The one step noise reduction is working on layers after these steps;
1) Create Restore Point
2) Uninstall PSPP X3 using msi from Corel
3) Delete left over files ( PSPContextMenu64RC.dll would not delete)
4) Reboot
5) Deletedd PSPContextMenu64RC.dll)
6) Create Restore Point
7) Deleted Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4
8) Reboot
9) Create Restore Point
10) Install PSPP X3from DVD v 13.2.0.35 & check - One Step Noise Reduction works on layers.
11) Create Restore Point
12) Reboot
13) Install Painter Photo Essentials 4 from DVD & check - One Step Noise Reductioon works on layers.
14) Reboot
15) Create restore point
16) Install PSP Project Creator from DVD & check - One Step Noise Reduction works on layers
17) Create Restore Point
18) Go to Help, Check for updates & install update to v 13.2.1.15
19) Check and One Step Noise Reduction used on layers crashes progam.
20) Restored back to restore point just prior to installing the update.
21 ) Checked and One Step Noise Reduction works on layers.

I feel there is a definite problem with that update, at least for my Win 7 64 bit system. I did notice that one of the "fixes" in the 13.2.1.15 update was for the One Step Noise Reduction. It would appear that this is causing problems.

I've got the same problem. How can I remove the last update? Do I have to uninstall the entire program?

Hello Corel? Do you have a fix planned for this?

Thanks,

Darryl

The only way I could find to go back prior to the last update without a usable restore point in windows was to uninstall and reinstall after which I did download and install Pack 2 (See Abiel Corel post Fri Jan 7 8:15 PM above for link). The DNR does work on all layers at that point. I am now getting prompts for the update which I am, of course, not going to do until there is a fix which I am not sure when or if that will be coming. There is one other work around for this rather than try to go back, and that is to use a free noise reduction program that I have found to be very good, and in some ways, better than that included in this program. It does offer some adjustments that can be applied to the default. It is called "Noiseware Community Edition". They do have paid versions which offer more but for my use the free has been more than satisfactory.

Wow! Thanks Harv, noiseware-community-edition really does do a nice job!
For anyone else that's looking for it, I found the free Windows version here:

Unless you've created a restore point before installing Service Pack 3 your only option is to remove the entire program.

If you haven't seen it yet there is a Service Pack 4 out that takes care of this and other problems.
