Video Studio Pro X3 requirements

Post by babyleon »

Though I would not expect it to run very fast, does anyone have any opinions on how VS Pro X3 would run on my present computer? It is a Pentium 4 3.0 processor with HyperThreading running XP Home with current Service Packs and 1.5GB memory, plenty of hard drive space. I am currently running VS 11.5+ and it is slow but not unbearable. Any siginificant rendering jobs I leave for overnight processing.

Another question: would the libraries I have created in my present VS be usable in Pro X3 (assuming I save them appropriately before installing X3)?

I would like to upgrade if only to be able to read/edit h.264/mpeg4 video without converting it first.

Thanks for any advice/comments.

If you are talking about AVCHD/h.264 mpeg-4, then you had better forget it. Your computer is just not up to the task. Believe me, I know, as I have an identical one (now moved to the role of second back-up computer). You might manage to edit it using SmartProxy, but a P4, even 3.0 GHz with HT, simply can't play AVCHD... Just before upgrading my computer, I tried editing some AVCHD and managed it, but it played back very jerkily -- in effect unwatchable. I thought at the time that the editing was similarly bad, but when I played the edited video on a (then new) Core 2 Duo, it played back fine. So that is what you would need at the very least for AVCHD: a decent Core 2 Duo, or Quad, or better still one of the new i-core 5 or 7...

Thanks Ken. I was afraid of that.... I don't know if I want, make that "can afford to", take the leap to a new computer just so I can add some mpeg4 video directly to projects without converting it first. I am still only rendering to regular DVD format for my finished DVDs even though I am filming all in HD (using Canon HV30s and a GoPro Hero HD - the one that produces the mpeg4 format stuff that I would like to add directly). I can use Super C (free) to convert my mpeg4 to mpeg2 for use in my current projects on my current computer.

A related question: If I take the leap to a Core i-7 computer with gobs of ram and such, and if I buy the VS Pro X3 upgrade, will I have to first install my present VS 11.5+ on the new computer in order to install the upgrade?

Also, any ideas on being able to use my VS 11.5+ libraries in VS Pro X3?

Thanks so much.

I went ahead and purchased VS Pro X3 (boxed upgrade) direct from Corel. I still have the same computer and would like to at least give it a try for editing my existing DV files. If I make a backup executable copy of my present VS 11.5+ program files on my second internal hard drive, would I likely be able to install X3 there without affecting my present installed VS11.5+ version and libraries on my C: drive? That way, if it doesn't run fast enough, I might be able to just go back to my VS 11.5+ until I can afford a faster/newer computer. Any guesses?

Yes, you can have multiple versions of VS on the same computer.
