Repeated crashes

Post by 0779mike »

I have downloaded the trial version of X3 and I prefer it to Vegas or Premiere Elements but it keeps crashing. I've downloaded a couple of patches to no avail. This is the most unstable piece of software I have used in 20 years.

But, I would like to get it working and buy it, where do I start ?

I'm new on here by the way.

VideoStudio is a game of two halves.
The first half - Editing - works fine.
The Second half - a new authoring tool that Corel tried to introduce Digital Studio 2010 is a nightmare and was so bad that Corel have now given all purchasers of VideoStudio X3 a FREE alternative - DVD MovieFactory 7SE.

When does your crashing occur.
If its in the editing stage then I am sure we can offer some help.
If its in the Authoring stage then make sure you get your FREE copy of DVD MF7SE and use that instead.

I have successfully created one movie a week ago (I had to use another application to write to the DVD).

Now I reload that previous project, import further clips from my C: drive and then I get ...

"The program has encountered an unspecified error and stopped functioning. Please contact corel technicl support and send the dump file for analysis. (followed by the address of the dump file)".

I'm working with HD footage downloaded from an SD card written by a Panasonic SD10 video camera at second best quality (HG from memory).

It actually crashes just before I put the tick mark against the clips that I want to import.

Can anyone offer some suggestions that might help me ? My trial will expire soon and I need to make a decision.

Now I start X3 and click on the clock symbol at the top left to look up my version number and X3 hangs, even Task Manager cannot stop it and I have to turn the laptop off manually.

Since you're not even working with any video at the time of the crashes, I would suspect a system conflict, anti-virus or firewall program/setting. What anti-virus program are you using? McAfee and Norton (Symantec) have been know to cause problems. I'm not sure if the trial version has a "phone home" function, where it needs an internet connection to do some sort of verification. I do know that Corel uses an anti-piracy function on their programs now, and it must be installed and allowed to run, or the program will not even launch. It does not need the internet, however must be running as as service on your PC.

Is your card reader internal (built in) or an external USB? I realize that you copied your video files to your HDD, however to eliminate a possibility, do you still have your card reader (if external) plugged into your PC?

Your system is more than adequate to not only edit HD/AVCHD, but to at least have VS launch and insert files without problems. Try looking at your error reports for your Win7 system. Not sure where they're found, but in Vista they can be located easily by right-clicking the Computer icon on your desktop, and selecting Manage. Then in the next window, look for Event Viewer. Clicking the little triangle beside it expands that category for more options. Try looking in the Windows Logs for entries that have a red (error) or yellow (warning) flag beside them. They might provide a good clue as to why or what is causing VS to crash.
