project playback problem
I am using VS8 (the 30 day trial version---try before you buy
). I have successfully captured video and began to edit. I have put about 5 seconds of black at the beginning, a title, a transition, and video in my time line. I then put another transition and video clip in my time line. At this point, when I try to play the project back, the video freezes and flickers on one scene. I do not see my entire project. Is this a probelem with the trial version or am I doing something wrong?

No, you're not doing anything wrong, except that you shouldn't rely on the Preview to judge the final output. The quality of what it displays depends on the overall speed of your system, and even then the display size often still doesn't match your eventual output size.
If you want to see what the completed project will look like, use Share -> Create Video File and output a DVD-compliant MPEG2 file (if you intend to burn this to disk, as most people do). View the resulting file using the separate external media player of your choice, like Windows Media Player.
UVS 9 has an improved Preview in the Share tab that is much more useful, and although it requires time-consuming rendering of the project, at least it plays back at the size defined by the project.

Thanks. However, my problem comes far before my final project. The playback problem starts when I am about 25 seconds into the timeline....meaning I have edited only 25 seconds of a 90 minute project. When I playback to see if I like the way it looks, it freezes and flickers on one frame, instead of showing me all the edits I have made. I cannot view any of the project. Any other suggestions?

1. Does your system meet the minimum system requiresments, i.e. do you have DirectX 9.0 or later, and preferably 512MB of RAM? Even with 3+ GHz processors, it may not be possible to preview a project smoothly and in realtime, depending on the format of the source videos, the filters and transitions being used etc.
2. If you do render that section of your project to an output file, does it look correct?

I don't believe system requirements are an issue. My source video was shot on digital 8. I am not using any filters. It is when I applied the second transition that VS8 decided not to play back my project.
I did try rendering a piece of the project and that looked fine in play back. However, I am not done editing. If I cannot see what I have done, how can I finish editing the project? This has me stuck. Ulead won't get my money if I can't figure out how to get the trial to work......
