Video Studio 10 - "not responding" when trying to Burn

Post by casbar »

Hello all

This is a first post, so please excuse any protocol errors.

Firstly, the link to 'image profile' does not seem to be working, so my details are as follows:
Operating System: Windows XP Pro SP3
Motherboard: MSI MS-7309 1.0
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio
Processor: 2.60 gigahertz AMD Athlon X4 620
512 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (4 total)
Hard Disk Drive: 500.11 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
455.60 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
Memory: 3008 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
Slot 'DIMM0' has 2048 MB
Slot 'DIMM1' has 2048 MB

Now to the issue: I have recently installed VS 10 and imported some items from both camcorder and also from VHS. Have managed to (sort of) edit them.

However, when I try to burn a disc the system hangs. The first time around, it seemed to be making some progress, then stopped. Subsequent attempts have not even begun the burn process. Details of the file I am trying to burn are:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 2000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 64 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks for an interesting and informative forum

Regards
Carol

Welcome to the Forums, Carol!  And your profile seems to have come out fine, but thanks anyway for repeating the details.

As to your problem, I am rather mystified why you are using such a very low (and hence verrrrry low quality) bitrate of 2000 kbps. Is your project an extremely long one? You can fit two hours of video comfortably on a single layer DVD using a bitrate of 4000 kbps, which will normally given you a quality akin to VHS, and 90 minutes if you up the quality to 6000 kbps. And it would probably not be worthwhile going any higher since some of your original video is from VHS.

How did you capture that video, by the way? Can you right click on one of those captured files either in the VS timline or in the library window and copy ALL its properties here please.

And exactly what workflow did you follow? Did you finish editing and jump directly to the burning stage (Share > Create Disc)? While that is, of course, completely do-able, in the past we had a lot of people having a whole lot of problems doing things that way. So we had (and to an extent still have) a habit of recommending that users having trouble at that stage of the burning process, try a different workflow.

Finish your editing, then choose Share > Create Video File and then choose either DVD if your project is an hour or less long; or 'Same as Project Settings' if you know those settings will produce a video of a size that will fit on a disc and they comply with DVD standards; or Custom if you want to fiddle with the settings (though ensuring they are still within the international DVD standards). Certainly, I think you should increase the bitrate to at least 4000 kbps or higher. Then you give the new clip ("title") a name and let the program do its thing.

Then when you have your new DVD-compatible mpeg, start a new project. Don't bother giving it a name or anything. The objective is just to clear the timeline of your existing project. Then select Share > Create Disc > DVD. The burning module will open, and you use Add Media to insert your new mpeg-2 in the burning timeline.

Click on the middle of the three icons in the bottom left of screen, and ensure the box beside 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files' is ticked. Then build your menu and burn. Using this workflow, you should not reach a step where the program is 'converting title' since the title (i.e. the mpeg-2) you produced is already DVD-compliant and needs no converting.

At least give that a go and see if it makes any difference...

Hi

Just to add, can you tell us where you bought VS 10 or rather is it VS10SE version?

Thank you for the very warm welcome! :D

Firstly to Trevor - clarification, it is VS10SE version, which was included with the capture cables I purchased.

Now to Ken: thank you for your detailed reply. As you may have guessed, this is a first effort for me so I am still feeling my way around the software (and becoming familiar with much of the terminology  )

The clip I am working on is only around 12 minutes duration, so not lengthy. This particular video was captured using Syntek STK1160, DVD format. I didn't go into the options panel, just let it do its own thing, so to speak.

Properties of the captured Video are:

File Format: PAL DVD
File Size: 443,854 KB
Duration: 1893 seconds

Video Type: MPEG-2 Video, Lower field first
Total Frames: 47,434
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 526, 4:3
Frame Rate: 25.000 frames/sec
Data Rate: Variable Bit Rate (max 2000kbps)

Audio Type: MPEG Audio Layer 2 files
Total Samples: 91,073,280 Samples
Attributes: 48000Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Layer: 2
Bit rate: 64 kbps

Yes, I did jump directly to the burning state (dear old my always did say I was like a bull in a chinashop  )

So I will now go back to my project, and follow your suggestions (hopefully) to the letter!

Thank you very much once again, and I will let you know how I get on.

Back again, and reporting on progress to date.

Have followed your suggestions Ken, and now have a file as follows:

File format: PAL/DVD
File size: 607,390 KB
File Duration: 706.600 seconds

Video type: MPEG-2 Video, Lower Field First
Total frames: 17,665 frames
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 576 4:3
Frame Rate: 25.000 frames/sec
Data Rate: Variable bit rate (Max. 6000kbps)

Audio Type: LPCM Audio
Total Samples: 33,916,800 samples
Attributes: 48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo

Have gone through the process (several times) of Share - Burn DVD - Add media - Next - but when I get to the preview screen, the system then hangs.

I might add that I have Roxio Creator 2010 Pro and I have similar 'not responding' problems when working within the DVD side of the software. Could it be that some other software may be causing the problem?

Hi Carol

You mentioned VS 10 SE being bungled with video cables.
These cables weren’t connected to a Easy Cap device were they?
If its not Easy Cap than ignore the rest of this post.
Another post here http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38244

Many users seem to have problems with this device.
At least you have managed to capture using it.
The VS 10 SE is a cut down version of the full program, not having all the features.
Unfortunately we don’t know what’s missing/changed.

Its now difficult to say if it’s the Easy Cap that’s creating a corrupt file, or a VS 10 program problem.

Are you able to use the VS 10 program using the libraries sample video’s, without the program hanging.
If yes, then we must suspect the Video file as being corrupt.
It may be best to convert the video using a separate program.

There is a program called Super that is used to convert video.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER
or from the forum free stuff here
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=12931

The program is FREE, take care when downloading as its sometimes difficult to find the correct link.
Use this to convert your captured file, using the same settings as the captured file.

Use the new video in VS 10.
Do you still have the same problems?

Hi again Trevor

Have downloaded SUPER (thanks for the link) and have tried to convert with what I think are the same settings. However, when I try to preview the file in SUPER, the Movie player also hangs???

Think I will try a fresh capture and see if I fare any better ...

Thanks and Regards

it is VS10SE version, which was included with the capture cables I purchased.
But to expand on Trevor's unanswered question, what did you purchase that included the VS 10 SE? Just cables, or was there a capture device?

Ok, now we are getting somewhere. If you do a search for Easycap you will see many people have problems with this product - largely because they are trying to capture with VS. Use the Easycap software to do the capturing. Once the files are on your computer then you can import them into VS for editing.

Hi Jeff

Easycap does not come with its own capture software, there is a USB driver with the package, but that just gets the pc to recognise the device whey you plug it in.

Easycap provides you with the VS 10 SE program to use as the means of capture.

Afaik there is no other software that is associated with the sale of Easycap except VS10

Ok. I guess I was confused because she listed
* 1 x Software on CD-ROM

----Features

* Includes Professional and easy-to-use video editing software: Ulead Video Studio 8.0 SE DVD
so I thought they were two different things.

Confused anyway, as her post is VideoStudio 10 Not Responding, yet VS 8 came with the Easycap.

I might add that I have Roxio Creator 2010 Pro and I have similar 'not responding' problems when working within the DVD side of the software.
Your original problem is with burning a disc, correct? Some burning software can actually "take over" your burner, not letting other programs use it. In another thread I found where Corel support says:
''Again, please make sure that any other burning tools / software are temporarilly uninstalled, especially those with DLA or PWA features like Roxio / Sonic / Nero, etc."

Confused you may be, but as far as i can remember Easycap advertize the product with VS 8 but send VS 10 on CD

Hi Casbar

Your video files properties look standard Pal DVD and should not give any problems

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

The only change would be the field order, your video being an analogue source would use Upper Field. But this would not cause the crashes, but merely a quality issue.

So we still don’t know if it’s a bad/corrupt video file or the program VS10SE that’s causing the problem.
By the way I have Easycap, it freezes my old XP computer, unfortunately it does not support Vista. At least you can capture…………..

To follow up on Kens advise regarding creating the video file first.

Go to File Preferences-Show Messages whet inserting first video……..
Start a new project then add your video file
A pop-up window should show, select details
View the right hand panel, these are your video files properties.
Then select OK/Yes to change the project properties to match the video files properties.

Save the project.

Now try Share Create Disc
From the burner module…….
Disable the option for Create Menu
In the last page Choose to create a DVD Folder to your hard drive.
That will save you a disc.

Does it still freeze / lock-up.

If ok then it maybe the Create Menu thats causing problems.
