DMF 6 Plus - How to download and save DivX codec updates?
DMF 6 Plus - How to download and save DivX codec updates?
I have DMF 6 Plus and it comes with DivX 5.1.1 by default.
When I first run the app, it prompts me to update the DivX codec to one in the 6.x family, which want to go ahead and do. However, instead of doing a live update over the internet, I would like to be able to download that update as a separate install executable so that I can install DMF 6 Plus, then the codec update without having to go online.
Is that possible? I sure hope so.
I would appreciate any helpful replies.
Thanks

Re: DMF 6 Plus - How to download and save DivX codec updates
I personally have never, in my years using them (including MF from version 4 onwards) received a message from one of them offering to update DivX... Nor have I ever used DivX videos with any version of MF.
That being said, I have bought successive versions of the DivX Pro codecs for use in Video Studio. But I always install DivX updates manually and quite separately from any other program. And these subsequently become available in Video Studio. (There was a hiccup with VS X2 but I currently have the latest version of DivX 8 working in VS X3...) I imagine the same would be true of MF.
But I am a little curious as to how you use it in MF. Sure, it would be necessary to have a DivX codec if you were inputting DivX clips. But as far as I am aware, you cannot *output* DivX video from MF, can you?

Re: DMF 6 Plus - How to download and save DivX codec updates
In a nutshell you simply download the latest version of DivX (Google search is useful here) and install it.
The codec is automatically recognised by MovieFactory, VideoStudio and any other similar programs you have installed.

Here is the dialog that popped up. I don't know what caused it to, but it has, and I'll try to repeat the steps to get the prompt. I'll post more about the vid stuff a bit later on. Thanks

I get those messages regularly, but direct from DivX, and not as part of MF or any other program...

Open DMF 6 Plus and add a video. When you have that loaded, choose to "Export Selected Clicks", choose the AVI type and click on Options. Go to the AVI tab, choose Compression and choose DivX 5.1.1 Codec, set Audio Format to MPEG Audio Layer 3, choose Attributes and set it to 22050 Hz, 64 kbps, CBR, Stereo. From there you should be able to export that bad boy with the settings you want. I have been using 800 kbps in the "Encoding Bitrate" in trying to find a balance between size and quality.Ken Berry wrote:I personally have never, in my years using them (including MF from version 4 onwards) received a message from one of them offering to update DivX... But that should do it. Please let me know if I left something out.

Re: DMF 6 Plus - How to download and save DivX codec updates
Hmmm!
In all my years of using various versions of MF, I have never noticed that Export option!
Maybe because I only use MF for producing discs...
FWIW, the DivX option I have in MF 7 Pro is version 6.9.2 which is the current, latest version... And as already noted, I installed that directly from DivX, and did nothing special in either VS or MF to get it to show...

Re: DMF 6 Plus - How to download and save DivX codec updates
DVD MovieFactory 5 and 6 - MULTI-TRIM - that is the Killer Feature. It is the single best implementation of that I've ever found. I record a show, clip out commercials, export 'em down to DivX 5.1.1 (that comes built-in to MovieFactory 6 Plus) and it works quite well. I can also do x.264 but I don't seem to find a reason to use it since I only do 480p. For whatever reason, if I install the updated DivX, it does not show up in MovieFactory 6 - only 5.1.1 is listed. I don't know if 6.9.2 is any better than 5.1.1. But if I install XviD, it shows up, as does x.264. Just no other DivX.
Wacky planet.
Thanks for the time.
HEY - QUICK QUESTION - do you use an XviD installation to export from DMF? If so, could you please share a link to one, providing you are satisfied with its functionality? I'd like to find a good one to install to get the best results. Thanks again.

I'm afraid I can only repeat:

And that goes for not only exporting DivX but XVid as well...In all my years of using various versions of MF, I have never noticed that Export option!

Re: DMF 6 Plus - How to download and save DivX codec updates
I got DMF I think version 3.5 bundled with an older Pioneer optical drive and was hooked. Version 5 was outstanding, and version 6 is even better. I have 6 Plus with the HD pack. It really is worth exploring all of the features the program provides. It has become my "GoTo" app for television archiving. Multi-Trim is an amazing feature, and you can zoom down as low as 1 frame at a time (default is 15 frames I think) so you can do some serious pin-point editing in Multi-Trim. The export feature is pretty great too. But one of the coolest thing about Multi-Trim in DMF 6 is that it asks you if you want to have the program automatically create Chapters for each of the segments in the Multi-Trim. That is so totally convenient.
So anyway, do you all have a preferred XviD version that you use? For VirtualDub, and other apps like that? There are just TONS of codecs out there and it's overwhelming when you try to pick out the best ones.
Happy Editing
