Exploding Holes

Post by Ian Green »

Can anyone please help me to create an "exploding Hole".
I want the "exploding hole" to appear as if it is the centre of a map.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Do you have an example of what you mean by "exploding hole"?

No I'm sorry but I don't have an example.
I imagine it as being the result of a "fist" smashing through a sheet of tightly held paper and leaving a hole surrounded by irregular strands of torn/curled paper?
Hope that helps???????

Well...it does to a point. I've never done that myself. Though I have done torn paper effects before.

What I did for those is I took a picture of a piece of paper with the tears and everything and I overlayed it over my picture. Then I filtered through my blend modes until I found one I liked. And I made any necessary adjustments to remove excess information from the image. I'll look into an exact procedure for you though. I imagine it's a bit more complicated to have an actual hole in the middle of the paper with curled torn edges.

Here are examples of what the end result looked like when I did it the way I described above. Both used the same paper reference.

But I'll look into that hole concept, now that I know what I'm looking for. Unless someone more knowledgeable comes along first that is. :D

EDIT: By the by this is for Paint shop Pro so I don't know how similar this will be if you're using a different tool.

Okay, not the greatest example but I think it will work for your purposes.

I used this map http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/ ... p#/d280yql

And this stock of a hole - http://loulou-stock.deviantart.com/art/ ... 8?q=1&qo=1 - this one can only be used on DA so you'll have to find a better stock or make one yourself. It's very simplistic so I doubt it'll matter too much.

First remove the black part of the hole by using the background eraser tool. Just make sure you don't move the middle part over the paper and it should erase only the black parts just fine.

Next place the map on a layer above the hole image. Change the blend mode to Burn and the map should be superimposed on the paper with the hole in it.

Next take your eraser brush and just erase the map where the hole should be and gently along the torn edges. Once your done the edges will have the backside of the paper showing, any shadows captured should darken the actual picture so it looks semi-realistic. It should look like there is a hole in the map.

Here's the finished version of my project : http://levifiction.deviantart.com/#/d2svqqf

And that's really all there is to it. Now I ended up discoloring the map. You can fix this by duplicating the map layer but if you do that you'll have to copy in some color for the torn edges because in this example they are pure white compared to the rest of the map. When I duplicated the layer to get more color there was too much contrast to be realistic.

What an Incredibly Clever, Astonishingly Wonderful, person you are.
That (apart from the map which will be my local one) is ABSOLUTELY 100000000% on target of my expectations.
Come to the UK ...... I'll buy you loads of beer for that!!!!
Thanks a lot,

Ian
