Some .gif are corrupted when opened in X3

Post by Crichton »

I just opened a .gif and there was something strange going on, I knew some pixels should be white, while in X3 I saw them black. I opened the image in Paint to be sure and I was right.

Here is how the real pixels should be:
real pixels
real pixels
topbar.gif (59 Bytes) Viewed 7528 times
And here is how the image looks like opened in X3 (I took a screenshot with STAMP and pasted into Paint and saved):
topbar-as-seen.gif
topbar-as-seen.gif (98 Bytes) Viewed 7528 times
You can test with topbar.gif, it's the same that gave me the issue. Open it in X3 and see, if you see a 2x2 white box near the bottom the issue presents, otherwise if you see a 3x2 rectangle of white pixels it's okay.

Welcome to the forums,

You're screen-shots look identical to me. You could try zipping up your GIF file and attaching it to your post, then we could have a look at it. I also ask with the current web technology, why do you still want to use the old, antiquated GIF format? That was way back when 56K was thought to be fast, so you needed your images in a format that would download/appear as fast as possible.

They look identical? Ron, they clearly are off by one whole pixel. It's right here. The dot in the second one is smaller than the first one.

Here's an example, zoomed way in for your convenience. I used his original GIF file.
Left one is the original Right is the result

And while I agree that it's odd to be using GIF there are some programs that prefer the use of GIF, and it's an odd graphic to begin with. But lack of need for GIF is no reason to ignore the fact that PSP is not importing it properly. Even the Open Dialog's preview renders properly. Such an odd thing.

Looked identical in the small example he provided, however in the zoomed in example it is more clearly seen to be off.

In Firefox, you need to right-click on them, and save them to your PC, then use Windows Media Gallery or some other program to view and enlarge them. The OP could have provided an enlarged screenshot so that it would have been easier to see what was happening..

I just took screen shots of Paint Shop Pro and Paint to get the enlarged version.

Sorry though, it just surprised me that you didn't notice the large area of black on the side of the white dot. It was glaringly obvious to me, didn't imagine anyone not simply glancing at it would miss that.

So now that we've established there's a problem....any ideas? Or is this just a problem that needs to be reported to Corel? I'd imagine there's not much else that can be done by the user, unless it was created in PSP and maybe there are some settings necessary. But I suppose we'd need more information on where the image came from for that.

Of course it'd be odd that Microsoft can render it properly and PSP can't. So my suggestion would be ask Corel, contact them and see what they can tell you.

It may be a problem with PSPP, which Corel should be notified of this. I wonder though, as I'm not as savy on PSPP as you are Levi, but it almost appears as a difference we that use video apps such as VS, refer to as square pixels and non-square pixels. One of the images appears rectangular, while the other appears square. I'll have to dig through PSPP to see if there is a setting somewhere that changes how pixels are displayed.

EDITED

I done some further checking, and I think we need more info from the OP, like what program was used to create the GIF file. I created one using PI, then opened it in PSPP X3. It does not show this problem. Opening both the images, saved from this post in PSPP X3, and they both look the same, even though one clearly has the 3-pixel wide white box.

It may also be how the OP created the "white box". In PI X3, I created a black background of 3-pxs wide X 40pxs high. I then created a white 1px X 1px square, which I duplicated twice, placing them side by side.

Thanks LeviFiction for providing the zoomed version. I couldn't post a bigger image because a) I didn't have a bigger version who presented the same issue and b) enlarging the original could lead to invalidating the cause of the problem.

I don't know the program was used to produce topbar.gif because it was sent to me by a colleague along with other graphics. After writing this, I decided to look into the other gif and I found other ones with loaded with wrong pixel data. Maybe those ones will clarify what happens, I'll post the original pic file and a zoom on what's going on:
original file ("save as" in ur pc and open in X3 to see the issue)
original file ("save as" in ur pc and open in X3 to see the issue)
tagcloud.gif (494 Bytes) Viewed 7477 times
tagcloud.zip
zip version
(616 Bytes) Downloaded 301 times
gif-issue.png
gif-issue.png (9.9 KiB) Viewed 7477 times
I suppose (but I'm not sure) they were produced on a Mac, maybe using the other famous graphic program... but I cannot be sure. Maybe the issue has to do with interlacing on/off, but I'm only guessing here.

So, it's adding a black bar to the end of each GIF file. All of the ones on my computer show the same thing.

So I say report it to Corel and if GIF is not absolutely necessary tell you friend to use PNG. It can support transparencies and more colors at a fairly small size.

Whilst the images posted by the OP show the added black line to the right when opened in PSPPX3 (but not in Corel instant viewer), none of the many .gif files I have (made with various apps, including earlier versions of Paintshop pro) show this. So I think it may be specific to the way the OP's files were created.

PSPPX3 on XP pro SP3.
