DVD Writer

Post by 62cwil »

Am getting ready to replace my DVD writer. Any opinion or experience on which may work best with VS9....Toshiba SDR5372 Dual Layer DVD=/-Writer or Plexor PX716A DVD =/- Dual Layer Writer.

Ditto, I have a Plextor PX-716A as well. Expensive, but easily the best burner I've ever owned.

DVD Burner...

I have had no issues or compatibilites with my burner (see my signature for model). I purchased it because others had recommended it over other models at the time. It is only a single layer burner, I am hoping the Blu-Ray HD-DVD wars will be over my the time I get the desire to get a Dual Layer burner. I am curious about the "Plextor 716a" I have never heard of this brand, but has good recommendation, so I see. Whatever you decide, I hope it works for you.

I was at a trade show working for Ulead last month. Across the isle, the Plexor booth folks were bragging on how well their drives worked with Ulead - there are some of their drives that have OEM versions of VS on them.

I build PC for a number of photolabs & I put in all sorts of DVDRW - TDK, LG, Sony, Iomega & Benq. Only the last two give some problems esp. the Benq 1600. It's basically a 16XDVD+R & supposed to write DVD-R after updating the firmware. After creating 10 DVD-R coasters that I finally gave up. My latest is a LG Multi 16X DL/RAM writer. Haven't tested the RAM writing yet but it's a first class writer not only in Ulead but in other softwares as well.

Thanks for feedback. Based on comments that came in first and my research I purchased the 716A around noon yesterday and installed it. So far I have captured and burned two 20 min home movies and both worked great and I might say much faster than my older drive. I re-burned a Video Studio Project that I had saved that originally took me almost 7 min to burn and burning using my new drive took me 5 min and 10 seconds. Also, before purchasing I called Tech Service to see how long it took to answer (3 rings). After getting I recalled as I wasn't sure about changing the faceplate to black and got answer in 5 rings and very friendly and helpful. Also, they are open in Tech Service until midnight WOW! At 9 last night I called just to ask several questions for curiousitsy sakes and line said busy and it took me 4 min but when they answered took time and went over all my questions.

If you haven't done so yet, install the PlexTools utility that came bundled with the 716A and explore the drive's advanced features, which can be configured using this program.

It lets you configure bitsetting (great for making +R media more compatible with older DVD players), read and write speeds, overburning (which may let you put more than 4.7GB onto a single-layer DVD), PowerRec (which can control the laser power), and Autostrategy (which allows the drive to develop the best write strategy for media which isn't in its internal database). This last item is a great feature for allowing the drive to burn media that was developed after the firmware was released -- with most other drives, such media cannot be burned reliably or not at all.
