Choppy video

Post by Photo-ay »

Dear videostudio-users,

This is my first time on a forum, so if I'm not very clear with my question, please let me know!

Since many years I use Videostudio (7 and later 10 plus)
Allways burning DVD's, searching for the right settings and managing to burn superb quality movies for my tv :D .
Since one year we use the Olympus pen for photo and video.
That also worked fairly well in VS 10 plus. (after days of searching for the right settings...)
Now I'm using a Panasonic camera too for photo and video. 10 plus doesn't accept those files.....
So we've downloaded ProX3 trial version. And every file is recognized! I was very very happy, not to have to change brand.....but now my problem. :(
Whenever I burn a DVD(like I used to) I get a very choppy/trembling movie....even with the pen-video files which were fine in 10 plus.
I've tried for 3 whole days to burn it in any possible setting, even tried to make a videofile and burn it with another program, but no way...no smooth movie...anything I've tried UFF, LFF, HD, DVD, HDV, variable, not variable, rendering on or of.....I've read all possibilities on the forum that could give a solution!
I must be doing something wrong, because VS has been great and there are so many settings.
VS phone (thank you Tim) and mail service (thank you Robby) didn't have the answer so they send me to this forum where they said the specialists would definitely know a solution!
So.....is there a solution and can anybody tell me how to burn a smooth DVD.

The settings of the files are:
PEN: AVI(mjpeg)
Panasonic: AVCHD
Photo:jpeg

Now I use the trialversion, but hopefully there is a solution so I can stay VS user and buy ProX3!

Thank you in advance for reading and for any help you can give!
If you have any questions, please let me know

Welcome to the forums,
PEN: AVI(mjpeg)
These are generally Frame based, and use a Frame-Rate of 30fps. So if your located in a PAL region, there will be 5 fps cut out of the video clip to make it comply with the international DVD standard of 25fps. If you're located in one of the NTSC regions then it will be relatively close to the the 29.97fps required, VS will have to compensate for an additional .03fps. Either of these could cause the video to not be smooth.

Now for quality, not knowing what the Frame size is, if your Pen records in a common Frame for these devices, of 640 x 480, then again VS will need to compensate to make the video file comply with the DVD standards of (PAL: 756 x 480, NTSC: 720 X 480), which could cause some loss in quality. I'm not saying that it should not or can not be done, just be aware of the sacrifice to produce DVDs.

FWIW, I have a few video clips that I shot with my digital still camera (Kodak P-880) that uses the MJPEG codec, however wraps it in the MOV file container. It is for all general purposes the same as what your PEN camera does, just that your PEN camera uses the AVI file container. I set my Project Properties to the following: (Note I'm located in a NTSC region, so the settings reflect that).
Project Settings
NTSC non-drop frame (30 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 640 x 480, 30 fps
Frame-based
MJPEG Compressor
PCM, 16.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono

Create Video File (For DVD)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 6500kps
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

If you're located in a PAL region then to produce DVDs you will need to use settings similar to this for your Create Video File:
MPEG files
24 bits, 756 x 480, 25fps
Frame-based
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 6500kps
LPCM audio, 4800 Hz, Stereo

Note: the data rates are not "set in stone", you can use constant or variable data rates, and whatever gives you the best quality, and allows you to fit the desired duration of videos onto a DVD disc.
Panasonic: AVCHD
This is outside my knowledge, as I don't have a camera that produces this High-Def format. However if you do a search on this forum for AVCHD, and Ken Berry you should find numerous posts that will help you with these.

Dear Ron,

Thank you for your response, with all the clear information.
Yes, I'm in a PAL region, so the difference is 30 to 25. When I look at the settings of the PEN files it says 1280x720. Aspect Ratio 16x9.
Could that be the reason? But still it's strange that in 10plus it looked a whole lot better....

When I choose the option burn create Videofile(DVD) does it keep the settings of the project?
Do you burn your DVD with another program?

I will try your suggestion!
Thank you again for your response! I will let you know today if your settings help!

Hi
I have a Pana TZ5 that produces Mov to Photo JPEG
Not the new AVCHD
Properties shown below taken from library clip, right click and select properties.
How do yours compare?
Image

I Converted this file to standard Pal settings below suitable for burning a DVD:-

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: 8000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Use Tools make Movie Template Manager to create a template or use the Custom option from Share Create Video file.

Playback on pc looks very good.

Flash version on you tube

Hi

Don’t use HD but those settings look NTSC, if it were Pal it would be 50fps not 59.94fps, as far as I know.
If so have you tried converting to Ntsc standard DVD settings.:-

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First (this is usually upper or frame based for HD)
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: 8000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Hi Photo-ay
I see you have MTS files! How do you transfer the clips from the camcorder to the PC? Did you have software supplied with the camcorder and if so do you use it or just drag and drop the files? I ask this because (Normally) if you use the supplied software to transfer the files, and that is usually the manufacturer's recommended method then I think your files would take on the M2TS file extension. I use this system and have had problems with MTS files and x3 but no problems at all when using M2TS files.

Thank you for all your suggestions!
And Mitchell, yes I use drag and drop..... I do have software with the camera, should that give the solution?
Why did it work out fine in VS 10plus?

And I don't like the program...the track editing in VS is so much better....... :D but if I use Cyberlink software, it's burned smoothly.....?

I've tried to convert to NTSC settings too, but no smooth files yet.... :(
I must be doing something wrong....but don't know yet what it is....

Thank you all for searching and reacting, I'm still hoping for a solution!!!
