How much free disk space do you have? When did you defrag your drive last?

If you are capturing directly to MPEG2 format instead of DV AVI, then your system is likely unable to keep up with the realtime transcoding process, and when the internal buffer fills up, it stops to clear the backlog of data. This is normal.

What is a P4 266 ?

THoff spoke about MPEG2, can you give more detail about what your trying to do? Are you transfering DV Video from DV Tape via Fireware to your hard drive (to a separate partition or to the same partition as your OS and programs?), as DV type 1 or DV type 2 AVI file (this will take about 12 GB for 1 hour of DV footage) ?

If you give people a little more detail, they will have more to go on and maybe give a better answer.

I think the 266 is the speed of his RAM/FSB, not the CPU -- 266MHz RAM is also known as PC2100...
