DVD5 or DVD9
Hi. If I used a DVD9 (7.95GB) instead of the standard DVD5 (4.37GB) while capturing/burning could I in theory use a high bitrate-say 8000 constant for a movie that is 90 minutes long? Has anyone tried this? I'm using Video Studio 10 SE. Thanks!

Hi
Use a bit rate calculator to help
http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php
better still, render your video and view the file size.
I’ve just burned my first DL. The video was 63 minutes but wanted to add personal folders.
Total file sizes was 6.5 Gb.
The video file size using 8000 constant was 3.876Gb,so for 90 minutes would equate to 5.6Gb
I ran a few tests a long time ago
http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/file_siz ... -size.html
maybe they will give you an idea

Re: DVD5 or DVD9
I generally try to avoid using dual-layer discs. Some DVD layers have trouble with "burned" dual-layer discs, and I've had a higher percentage of burn-failures with dual-layer discs. (Most commrcial DVDs are dual-layer and of course all DVD-players can play these... It's only homemade-burned dual-layerDVDs that seem to cause trouble.)
In some cases I'll use a lower bitrate, or if it doesn't need to be "one long movie", I'll use two discs.
Or when my nephew was having this trouble with his player, I sent him some two disc sets... A "high-quality" dual-layer disc plus a "highly compressed" single-layer copy in case the dual-layer disc won't play.

... and just to expand on Doug's otherwise tantalising reference to commercual dual layer discs, they are pressed, and not burned. That is why they don't cause any problem...

Hi Doug
Regarding Duel Layer discs, I am aware of problems with DL discs and now have first-hand experienced of it.
But thought I had to give them a go!
First attempt was to burn an Iso using the DVD/DVD disc Image recorder, Didn’t get far, one coaster.
Second I used VS X2, completed the burn but with a warning/error message, can’t remember what it said, very remiss of me, disc played but failed part way through, now I have a matching pair of coasters.
Not to be outdone I up graded the firmware on my Liteon burner.
Third time lucky, success.
Lets hope that was not a one off

Hi Trevor
I have been looking at dual layer discs but am not sure how common it is for a standard TV DVD player to handle dual layers. I produce videos for a Horse Rescue charity that I do work for and most of the videos go out from our charity shop but I know a lot of people locally will go for a cheapie player from Tescos or similar. Interested in your thoughts on this.

my experience of dual layer is I'd keep to single layer whenever possible

That's my thinking too Graham but I was just wondering how many people would likely be able to play a dual layer, just out of interest really.skier-hughes wrote:my experience of dual layer is I'd keep to single layer whenever possible

Re: DVD5 or DVD9
on a pc everyone you make a good disc for, on a dvd player, then real high quality burns on high quality discs, maybe 75% on a dvd player which will play dual layer burned discs, thenh you have all the people who think their dvd player should play them and they won't becaue they don't

Hi John
Regarding DVD players, Its been discussed on the forum before, with comments of buying a cheapie would probably play most if not all formats/disc types, and probably greater variety than a more expensive version, indeed I bought one for a tenner when Div X first came out.
Its not just the type DL or SL to bother about but the manufacturers compatibility.
So which ones do you buy, I opted for a Ritek make, used many singles disc with little or no problems. (from Bigpockets)
Its my first time in using DL, a long 30 day cruise produced 5 hours of video, still editing, but didn’t want to use more than 2 discs so decided to try the Duel Layer.
So if your video is under 90 minutes then I would keep to single layer. Two more movies in the pipeline for DL.
But I had to give it a go sometime.
As a test I burned my first discs yesterday unfortunately produce two coasters, not a good start, updated the Rom drives firmware and was ‘third time lucky’ I have a disc that plays no problem on my LG recorder/player, just tried the cheaper Tevion player, read the disc immediately no problems plays ok. Not so good at burning them, practice I suppose, but 2 out of 2 for the players.
I’ll be visiting relatives over the weekend, will take the disc with me, I’m sure they will be over the moon to watch my movie.
John If I forget to reply to you with results, give me a nudge,
