Suddenly, coasters! Is it the disks--or Ulead?

Post by kebrinton »

Here's what happened during a recent marathon burning session: I had to produce thirty two-DVD copies of a student-performed opera.

I started with my HP-brand DVD+R collection and went through that, then bought (at a fantastic price) some new ones at Staples. Although the project proceeded, I suddenly produced a coaster; then another. I considered the first one just luck of the draw, but with the 2nd, I rechecked everything. Then there was a third coaster. I tried a DVD+RW (Hewlett-Packard brand) and that burned fine! Back to the Staples disks...and another coaster!

I opened the second package, hoping I just had a faulty spindle-full, but the first one...coastered too!

Then somebody suggested that possibly Video Studio got "tired" and needed a little break; say a day off. But if a program needed time off, I'd have to include not just VS, but also DVD Shrink, and the Ulead .ISO file burning utility! Would they ALL need time off? Seems impossible.

So: Did Staples sell me a couple of spindles full of junk? Or what?

Hi Keith,

Difficult to tell based on the sample size i.e. two spindles from Staples, your HP DVD+R and the RW. But I would have to assume that your Staples DVD's were duds - this assumes that you were not "stressing" anything such as the DVD write speed that the discs were rated at etc. But knowing you are an experienced user, then I can't see that as being the problem.

Try another source of DVD's and take the others back for a refund (I try and keep ahead of the game by visiting a local computer fair [best prices] and buying up plenty of discs so I am never short - but you can't always plan that far ahead :-)).

Download the free version of DVD Info Pro and have it obtain the Media Code / Manufacturer ID for the disk, and post that here. You can also search VideoHelp's DVD Burner Database to see if the media you bought works well in your burner.
