will mpeg degrade my quality ?

Post by bnigrell »

Dear all

I have just bought a new HD videocamera Canon HF20, and new also to Videostudio Pro X3.
My input files are the one stored in the camera and appear as .MTS type of file.
H264 : 1920x1080, 25 fps, 22699kbps
When I render, I am using the "same as 1st clip" setup for the video quality.

What I see, is that this is saving the file as a .MPG extension.
I am wondering is this mpeg compression will degrade the quality of the video ? To which extent ? Shall I do differently ?

Thanks for any help you can provide and sorry for this newbie question.

Bnigrell,

The simple answer is NO since you are using "same as 1st clip". If you look at your before and after video file with this independent software, MediaInfo found here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo you will see that there is NO difference in the video or audio codec specifications. Also you could load the newly created video file in VS and right click on it, selecting PROPERTIES to verify that it is the same format.

You can also rename your .MPG file to .MTS! I suspect that Corel is using the ".MPG" tag to get around some license issue with the Blu-ray camp and the ".MTS" file extension, could be wrong.

For general information, .mts is an mpeg-4 (.mpg) of the transport stream (TS) variety...
