1-When I add a title to my video --such as the graphic of a film with sprocket holes-- and then replace "my title" with my own title:
on playback I simply see my own title and it is not embedded in the film graphic. How do I correct this problem?
2-There seems to be no instructions on how to insert transitions. All I see is the letter "A" between clips and there is no way to replace the "A" with a transition. Again: How do I make this work?

Re: Transitions & Titles
Digital Studio 2010 is a suite of programs, which one are you using?
For VS 2010, to add a transition:
Mouse over the Settings menu on the right side, which causes the settings box to slide open. Then at the top of the Settings box is the Transitions. Mouse over the transitions, and a fly-out will open presenting all the transitions. Click on the transition you want to add.
Are you using the Simple Styles? That's the only place I'm seeing one as you described. To change your title, you need to be in the step where on the bottom-right you see the tabs, Media, Styles, Titles, Soundtrack, and Voice-over. Click on the Titles tab, then above your clip in the time-line you will see the titles appearing as call-outs pointing to the location in the time-line where they are positioned. Double-click on it, and it will appear highlighted in the preview screen. Now you can change it to your liking.
To add a title in some other position, you need to position the playhead, then select one from the title time-line. Then change the wording in the same fashion as stated above..
