DVD video files not captured properly

Post by Leigh61 »

When Capturing or Transferring Digital media to the Library or the Timeline from a DVD +RW with many chapters, I get a smaller time length file that appears to jump between chapters missing out huge chuncks and chapters. After the Parse content stage where the DVD is analysed, it can see all of the chapters but can't distinguish any (eg if you click on a single chapter to import it cannot select it). It appears to be a problem with DVD +RW not -RW when there are many chapters eg 70 or so (I like to film short sequences). I am using a Sony DCR-DVD 405E Handycam.
The DVD when finalised plays OK on a commercial DVD player or software DVD player with all the chapters functioning.
Any advice anyone?

Hi Leigh

Welcome to the forum
As you mention that -RW is ok, It may well be a compatibility with +RW and your drive rather than VS.
What version of VS are you using.?

Are you able to select the Title option, this should import the video to a single file.
There is some delay when selecting these titles/chapters.
You could then try Split by Scene to separate the chapters.

Alternatively, copy the disc content to your hard drive.
Re-name the Vob files to use Mpg extension.
Import / insert as a normal video.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for your quick response. Success! I followed your advice and did a bit of tinkering. I copied the Video_TS file to the hard drive and did Import from Folder. When VS Parsed the content, it threw up 2 titles each with the same 70 Chapters. The first title was corrupt as before but the second allowed me to select the chapters individually. Strange!

For reference I am using VS Pro x2 (12.0.96.1). I couldn't change the .vob files to .mpg - they became .mpg.vob files and could not be recognised by VS. Also your other suggestion of importing the whole title didn't work either as it gave one small file that couldn't be 'split scened'. No matter - we seem to be there and it seems to have been associated with +RW discs.

Best,

Leigh

Hi

When you view your files using windows explorer, switch to ‘Detail’ view, do you see the file extensions.
Your Vob files should be similar to VTS_01_1.VOB
If you only see the first part as VTS_01_1
Then from windows explorer go to Tools-Folder Options-View tab, uncheck Hide Extensions for Known File Types.

You will then be able to change the extension.
Take care when re-naming files as changing the extensions can have drastic effects.
