Starting a project
Sorry if this seems a bit basic but am only just starting out with VS Prox3 having used 7 then 10. Everything seemed smooth with these editions but I just want to know what project properties I need set to simply import a dv tape and record back to dv tape. So far the pic in the preview window has varied in size - black bars at side, then black all around the pic etc, likewise when importing stills (previously the still on the finalised dv film has filled the tv whilst keeping aspect ratio) I have black lines each side. I am creating a dv 16:9 file, but guess I have gone wrong somewhere earlier. Also I can remember quite a while ago a post/tutorial about setting up how to set a profile up to just carry out Video editing on a computer, is it still available and will it be the same now? Thanks.

Hi
Capturing from DV tape via firewire to produces a DV-Avi file some 13 Gb per hour.
This is the best method to capture/transfer the video to the pc.
Your Project properties should match the video files properties.
Video Studio will do this for you………
From Preferences- select Show Messages when Inserting First Video……
1 / Starting a new project ensures that the first video inserted will activate this option.
2 / Capture video to DV format, the captured files will load to the timeline.
3 / VS will open a window prompting you to change the Project Properties, view the window in Detail, the right panel shows your video properties.
4 / Choose Yes/Ok, your project properties will be changed, your video should view as ok.
5 / Edit the project then Share Create Video File –Same as first clip will create a new video file.
A thumbnail will be loaded to the library, export this back to your camcorder.
Still Images
If you are using widescreen 16:9 then the still images should use the same aspect ratio to fill the screen, 1024 x 576 is a good start.
If you are capturing an image from the video project then switch to ‘Project Playback’. Then use Tools, Save Current Frame as Image, should give you the correct size.

Re: Starting a project
Assuming NTSC:
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
The safest way to make sure you are matching your camera is to capture video from your camera and then check the properties of that video file. You can then make your project match it. Also, you should turn on the "Show message when inserting first video clip into the Timeline" option in the general tab found under Settings | Preferences.
The aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9 will depend on how you have your camera setup to film. You will want to set that according to your preference on your camera and then match it in the imported project. Also, you will want to render a file with the same properties usually.

Now using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop
