Strange aspect problem when importing DVD file

Post by Roadgiant »

Just to give a little background, I have imported a DVD file to my PC which contains two folders, VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS using DVD Fab from a DVD-RW created by my DVD recorder, recorded with 16:9 ratio. I wish to edit part of the content using VSX3.

First of all from the file menu I choose Import from Digital Media, I am then given the option to select import source folder (in this case called LG_VDR containing the 2 folders, VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS). When I select the file it tells me the name of the File, Date, Clip Size and here's the problem:- aspect ratio 4:3 and of course the file imports with that same ratio, as mentioned earlier the DVD was created with an aspect ratio of 16:9! On start-up of VSX3 the 16:3 is checked

On the same PC I still have VS12 and using this to import the same file from it's folder everything is correct and the ratio is the correct size ie 16:9.
As a workaround I am currently importing the DVD file using VS12 then creating a video file and then subsequently using VS13 to edit.

Hope I have explained this clearly enough, thanks in advance for any suggestions please ask if there is any other info needed.

Hi
First I only have X2
I to have an LG recorder, recording in 16:9
Using X2 the import digital media sees the video as 4:3 but imports it as 16:9.
A little confusing to say the least.
I will do a few tests to double check the aspect ratios, unfortunately the better half is watching the tennis at the moment, so it will have to wait a while.

1 / Have you manually updated Direct X. There is a link at the top of this forum.
The update does cure some strange problems with video studio, worth the effort.

Some options to try….
2 / When you import to VS try using the 'Import’ option rather than from the folder option, although I doubt if it will make any difference.
3 / Saved the TS folder to your hard drive, rename the Vob files to use the extension .MPG
Import these to the timeline as a normal file (Insert Video)

Thanks for the reply Trevor, yes you're correct it is an LG Recorder, as I mentioned I have VS12 as well as VSX3 PC, with VS12 everything works fine and it shows it and imports it as 16:9, but the method of import appears to be different from VS12 to VSX3, in that on VSX3 it just gives the option to select import source folders in a tree format of folders including drives, rather than the option of select title, drive or import from folder.

Hi RG

Using X2
Gone through a few recording tests with the LG and I am unable to import any DVD as 4:3 aspect ratio.

As I said earlier the import window clearly shows the disc as being 4:3 but imports it as 16:9.
(view your import details using X2—select a title first)

I recorded a Benny Hill program this morning which is definitely transmitted as 4:3 but LG treats it similar to widescreen using 4:3 zoom option displaying a full 16:9 screen.
Maybe LG just doesn’t do true 4:3.

The imported files in the timeline show them as 16:9, so Benny has put on a little weight.
Sorry I cannot follow this up using X3

RG

Did you try re-naming the Vob files to Mpg? (this may give you 16:9 on X3)
Did you update Direct X ?

Thanks for the reply, yes I tried re-naming the Vob files to Mpg and updating Direct X, exactly the same everything's fine if I do it with X2, but still not getting the result with X3, I've checked every single setting I can find, it' can't be the imported file(s) as they are fine with X2 only wrong with X3.

Download the freeware gspot and analyze the vob file with it.
At least you will know then whether the file IS in 16:9 format or not.
If it is in 4:3 then perhaps X2 is doing something special to recognize the 16:9 format, what X3 doesn't do.
