I'm confused. Are we talking Smart Proxy or SmartRender? Ken Berry has advocated for turning off SmartRender when working with HD. But Smart Proxy is supposed to be used for HD files.

Smart Proxy is crashing my system - to be honest, I wasn't aware of any setting for smart render and can't seem to find that anywhere.

Ok. Just wanted to be clear. SmartRender is found during the rendering (Share) process.

Hi BUGS-R-US

Smart Render

Go to Share Create Video File - chose a template try ‘Custom’

In the following window ( Create Video File) choose the ‘Options’ button

There are a few options to choose from. One being ‘Smart Render’

So what does it do?

Basically if you are rendering ‘like for like’, Mpeg to Mpeg for instance, then the process will virtually copy the frames and only render fully any portions that have been edited. This speeds up the render as not all frames are being rendered. I’m sure there’s a more technical explanation.

If you render a project, then edit that project and render again then you will see a massive improvement in speed, its already done the render and only fully renders the edited frames, Smart Render.

But Smart Render has caused some problems in the past and advice to switch it off is given.

Smart Proxy
Is used to create virtual files representing the originals, being smaller allows Video Studio to play the video without problems. HD files are on the large size, slower PC’s may have difficulties playing them especially in project mode, Smart Proxy does help.

thanks for the "smart render" explanation - I'll check it out.

Only one minor crash after about 8 hours of editing with Smart Proxy turned off - Hallelujah!

If I had one request, it would be the ability to add any transitions to Overlay Tracks and Titles, rather than only being able to use the canned stuff

I believe I may be holding a candle to hope. I too have had not much early success with the X3 version. I have called Corel support and have tried the suggestions such as '' working with High Definition files, kindly enable the Smart Proxy", and ''Again, please make sure that any other burning tools / software are temporarilly uninstalled, especially those with DLA or PWA features like Roxio / Sonic / Nero, etc." I tried reinstalling windows clean as 32 bit, then with VSX3 only. I tried the other suggestions above to not install the updates. etc. All to not much avail. I always started task manager to watch the CPU Usage History on the Performance tab. I have finally reinstalled Windows back in 64bit mode, frustrated and inclined towards the APPLE MAC version of ADOBE Premiere PRO CS4. A steep learning curve! But then I remembered from watching the CPU usage, on my machine I had 8 cpu's, and only 4 were in use during the Share - Create Disc - DVD factory 2010 - AVCHD or DVD choice - and inserting chapters, before the program stalled and became non responsive, and crashes. I am fortunate to have another machine with WIN7 32bit Home Premium with only four cores on it. It was slower but it always works! Even choosing DVDFactory 2010.
In BIOS I disabled Hyperthreading. Restarted, and now VSX3 works! Even burning from VSX3 to DVD Movie Factory 2010.
So in general, if hyperthreading is disabled, it may be the answer. I'm not saying it is the final answer, or a workaround, but it worksfor me. The VSX3 code may be not using the hyperthreading correctly, or maybe the windows/hardware is not handling it well. There is a speed increase, as it now works!!
