When I try to select "create video file in AVCHD" it automatically starts doing it in mpeg? I'm thinking avchd will be a bit better and also i'd like to create an avchd disk....

AVCHD *is* mpeg -- it is high definition mpeg-4 produced with the H.264 codec.

And yes, X2 can certainly produce AVCHD as many users will attest, including myself. I have also successfully a number of AVCHD hybrid discs using X2. Just remember *not* to use SmartRender...

Thank you, in that case I'm 90% of the way there 8)
while it appears to render in mpeg, at that the last second it says it says "file format not accepted" and closes. I wonder if I need to register files from my panasonic like you used to have to do with sony camcorders? mmmm
