Re: DVD to USB

Post by DVDDoug »

Think I need some clarification on DVD file structure-
Doom9.net has some information about the DVD structure.
1 Is a DVD(or at least the one I made with VS) MPEG 2 If so why is not the media box playing them.
I dont' know... It probably doesn't recognize the VOB files as MPEG.
2 Can a DVD be anything else
DVDs can also be MPEG-1, but I've never seen an MPEG-1 DVD. DigitalFAQ.com has a chart of the audio/video format specs for DVDs.
3 Does every DVD have Video_TS files and what do they do/ made up of
See the above link.
4 Does a DVD that has no video but only stills in it still have a Video_TS folder
Yes. The stills are converted to an MPEG "movie" that contains a series of stills.
5 Where do VOB files fit in to all this.
The VOB files are MPEG-2 with particular audio/video requirements & limitations (not all MPEG-2 files are DVD-compatible).
6 What is the difference between creating an mpeg file prior to burning and saving that to the USB drive and copying a DVD which is mpeg
You can have a single MyVideo.MPG file instead of the VIDEO_TS folder and the VTS_01_0.VOB files, etc. You can play the MPEG-2 file on a computer/device that plays MPEG-2 files (and the associated autio format), but most set-top DVD players will not play raw MPEG-2 files. (And, you won't get a menu.)

No time to think.

connect to any TV via RCA sockets, not every one has a DVD connected to a TV in every room.It can also be played (if I get it sorted) on a PC with out a DVD rom drive.I only want to view it like a digital picture frame but using a TV.

Hi Kenneth
Re the red part above. Just change the VOB extension to MPG. It will work in your player then .

While that is certainly the case, it again begs the question of why Kenneth V needs to burn a DVD if he is aiming to play it over his media box (apart from having a full video DVD for his collection!) It seems like opening a peanut with a sledgehammer to produce a full DVD with menu, only to find that he has to then rename a set of .vob files with a new extension.

If he wants to play his rendered project back over the media box, it is best to simply render the project to the DVD-compatible mpeg-2 as suggested several times above, and then copy that mpeg-2 to his USB stick and play that on the media box. That way he gets it all (apart from a menu) in one go.

While he can of course rename the .vob's as .mpg's, as I said clearly above, a .vob can only be a maximum of 1 Gb in size, So if you rename all the .vob's, then you are going to have a number of separate files to play, broken off at odd points of the overall video and only corresponding to the 1 Gb limit, not to the sense of the video "plot"...

Moving permanently to New Zealand. Bought a house there a few months ago, and am just sitting out my current contract here -- which includes a visit to Vienna (and more video opportunities!!) in early July -- before I can leave...
