copy to a cd a slide show for use on a tv set
I was told by the sales people that I could create a slide show using x3 and creator and put it onto a cd for playback using a dvd player connected to a tv set. However, I have tried several approaches and they do not seem to work. Any suggestions?

What doesn't work?
The cd in the dvd player?
You need to check what your dvd player will play, making a cd you will either have a data cd, with your movie burned directly to it in say wmv form and your dvd player will need to recognise this and be able to play whatever file format is on the disc, or you can make a vcd or an svcd, again you need to read the manual to find if your dvd player plays these.
The burning of the cd?
Let us know any error messages or whereabouts it fails.

I can make a slideshow into a video file in Creator but have not located a process within either program to burn the video onto a cd/dvd.

Yes I see what you Mean. Do you have any Disc Burning software ? what operating system are you Using ?
If you save it as a file In Dv format then it will be easier for DVD burning software to create a video DVD For example In Win & you will find DVD maker.
That said You can just drag the images into DVD maker and bypass Project creator
