Aif sound files behaving oddly

Post by Will_cain »

When I use an AIF file it plays perfectly as a clip but in the project view it just makes "white" noise. Am I missing some addon, though its hard to see how if plays OK as a clip

I''m not familiar with AIF, but maybe it's the same as AIFF? (AIFF is common on Apple computers.)

In any case, you'll probably need to convert the file to WAV. You can do that with an audio editor or an audio conversion program. In case you don't have a program to do it, here are a couple of FREE ones:

Audacity (Audio Editor)
SUPER (Audio/Video Format Converter)

I note that X3 can accept as input, among a lot of others, audio files in the .aiff/.aif format. However, even if it can play them, that does not necessarily mean that they can output in that format natively, which essentially is what it is trying to do in Project mode. As with some other formats, both video and audio, VS does not natively install the necessary codecs.

So I am wondering if in this case there may be a decompressor codec on your computer, but not a compressor equivalent... At any rate, VS sometimes has a similar problem with other audio formats, and most notably .mp3 files encoded with the LAMEmp3 codec. And our advice is usually that already given by DVDDoug -- namely, convert the audio file to standard .wav and then insert that in VS.

The really odd thing, is worked on X2. It is an Apple file. I know I can convert them but theres a lot so I was hoping to fix it

Cheers

Hi Will
Just read this thread and can't help wondering why you don't use VS x2 instead to do this if it works OK?

Mitchell -- I understand your kind thought, but there are a lot of other users out there who are starting their video lives with X3 and who don't have the luxury of having X2 still on their systems, if they ever had it!! Sure, it might work for the OP if he/she still has the original programs, but there are going to be a lot of other people out there who don't...
