Black screen when scrubbing

Post by booker »

I apologize ahead of time, but I am new to this stuff and I may have made a simple mistake.

Problem: I burned a home dvd onto my computer that is approximately 2.5 hours. It is separated into 2 one hour clips and a 30 minute clip. I imported all of them to VSx3. Well, one of them (the first one hour clip of the entire dvd) has a black screen when I drag the scrubbing thing across. The other two clips are just fine and I can see video when I scrub them. Does anyone know what the deal is? Thank you.

p.s. all the clips have been renamed by me to WMV files.

What do you mean, they have been renamed to WMV files? Are they MPEG2 (as a ripped DVD would be) or WMV files?

by scrubbing do you mean quickly running the timeline up and down?
If you just play the timeline, do you then see the video?

Hi
If the video source is a DVD then the files will be Mpeg2.
Did you use Video Studio to rip the DVD?

I don’t understand where the WMV comes into it.???????????????

Do both the 1hr and 30 minute videos have the same properties?
Right click the videos in the timeline and select properties, what are they?

thanks for all the responses so far. i am not at home right now so i can't check the properties at the moment.

i ripped the dvd with DVD FAB.

yes i am talking about scrubbing the timeline. when i push play the video plays fine. but, when i tried to put a clip from that video into the storyboard it was weird...it was flashing and wasn't even a full screen.

here is a better description of what i did when i imported the video. it worked for the other two...i just don't know why this one is that way.

1. video is on C drive
2. clicked on the video and then clicked on Video TS
3. the videos were labeled something like "video_TS_1"
4. the videos would not import like that so i renamed it by deleting the last number and putting in "WMV"
5. i did that with all videos and they all imported.

just one of them is weird like i described.

Surely Video_TS and subsequent -1 2 3 etc are the folders which contain the VOB and IFO files. I wonder where the WMF extension came in. I think you can only import from the VIDEO_TS folders by going down the "Import Digital Media" route and selecting the folder not individual files until that option comes up. Then they are video files not specific audio files so naming them WMF would cause problems surely. Two different types of media! ! Bit confusing this

Hi

To import a DVD --- TS folder.

Right click timeline and select Import Digital Media.
Navigate to select the TS folder on your hard drive.
(or you could import from the actual DVD in the drive).

From the import window select the ‘Title’ buttons.
The video will import as Mpeg 2 video saved to the working folder, with the thumbnails loaded to the timeline.

Hi,

With 2gb ram and trying to edit/scrub 1hr of video I am surprised your machine does not freeze/lockup and die?

If you have proxy enabled I am sure the hard drive light will be continually on?

If the video plays fine but you get a black screen when scruubbing the timeline that is prob cos the video can't keep up?

I tried everything last night and nothing worked. I tried importing the entire dvd itself and I got a message like "valid file format not found" or something like that.

When I try to use a clip of that video on the storyboard and play the project the clips from that video constantly flash like I am watching some kind of old time movie or something.

If you think the entire hour of video (along with another hour video and a 30 minute video) is too much for my computer would it make a difference if i separated it into like 10 minute clips or something, import 1 of them, use it, delete it for VS3, and import the next one to use?

like i said...the other 1.5 hours work fine. thanks.

Hi

1 / Insert Digital Media………….
If the DVD contains ‘chapters’ you should be able to select these instead of the ‘titles’
This would import the video in smaller sections, if it is a size issue then this may work.
If you cannot use the Import Digital media then the disc may be corrupt,
You do not say where you got the disc from, how it was created??????????????

2 / The DVD contains Vob files. Each being up to 1 Gb. Saving the DVD to your hard drive would allow you to rename the Vob files as you did earlier but use Mpg as the file extension, after all the Vobs are basically mpegs as mentioned by Jeff.

With the clip in the timeline, right click each and select properties, what are they?

4 / You could of course try to convert the video to another format, maybe DV-Avi.
But if it is a problem with the files/disc then this is not gonna really cure things.

5 / Please update your profile to include your pc spec’ then others may be able to comment on your pc’s capabilities.
Have you tried Smart Proxy as suggested by Accolades

thank you. i do remember when i looked at the properties last night that they were all MPEG and the two that work fine said "upper field first" next to it. the one that does not work right did not say that. does that make any kind of sense?

Having different properties………. I don’t understand why that should be as they came from the same DVD. Although anything is possible.
Maybe you could expand and give more video property details.
