Same Settings as First Video Clip not available with MP4

Post by johnrr6 »

I can easily import HD .mp4 clips from a Sanyo Xacti VPC-SH1 into VS X3 Pro.

The Sanyo VPC-SH1 automatically transcodes the clips into an H264 Baseline format in .mp4 files as they are recorded on the camcorder----very sweet.

The quality is excellent and using Picture Information Extractor----I can import the clips with a proper file name and date/time instead of a stupid file name like sanyo001

I can then quickly splice and edit clips in VSX3 Pro.....

But here is the problem-------when I produce as a video file----the setting: "Produce With Same Settings as First Video Clip" is greyed out and I am forced to pick a production format the basically re-encodes the movie back into a simalar flavor of .mp4.

The formats that VSX3 Pro allow force me into using the H264 "Main" profile vice the "Baseline" profile the clips come off the Camcorder formatted in.

The "Baseline" profile cannot be setup properly in any custom profile that I have tried to set up----at least not for 1280 x 720 High Definition with a bit rate of 5000.

Anyway----I really don't want to re-encode anything----the clips ALREADY are in a nice quality well compressed format that plays beautifully on Vimeo, YouTube, my iPad----you name it.

By using the VSX3 Pro profiles I am forced into it:
1. Increases the overall file size of the video
2. Adds to my production time by forcing a re-render
3. Just seems "redundant"

How can I get VSX3 Pro to just splice these files and then put out the production in the same thing it was originally encoded with---no fuss---no muss???

PS----and you guys may already know this----but unlike minDV files, the new hard drive camcorders and High Def camcorders don't put the kind of meta data into the normal spots that DV used for years------hence trying to rename files is a bear if you want the files named with something like the date and time they were recorded. The solution is to use a normal EXIF data reader/file renamer that is used for STILL pictures. But do NOT use the "Date Created"-----use the "Date Modified"----for whatever reason----the actual recording date and time is stored in Windows 7 files as the "Date Modified"

Picture Information Extractor is free and is incredible flexible in renaming video files. I do baseball game films and want my film clips to be entitled with the name of the team we are playing and the Date/Time taken----for example: It automatically tuns a worthless file name like: Sanyo001 into a useable file name like: Kellam 5-5-2010_17-55

Tools like WinDV and dvDate do it really well with MiniDV tape captured clips-----but when working with .mp4, .mts, .m2ts, .mod etc.....it is problematic. PIE can really help----you can get it here: http://www.picmeta.com/download.htm

You will still be better converting MP4 to MP2 for editing purposes?

MP4 is HIGHLY COMPRESSED....

Much like converting a music WAV file to MP3

ps may be worth putting your system information into your profile via User Control Panel :-)
