24mbs

Post by erdna »

I am still on VSX 2 which works flawless, but is limited to 18mbs for AVCHD work. Does the X3 version comply with the new(er) 24 mbs standard for AVCHD?

One of the first things I tested during the Beta testing phase was that X3 could play 24 mbps AVCHD properly. Unfortunately, I confess I never took it one step further and processed it to produce another video with the same properties. Have you tried yourself, either by using Share > Create Video File > Same As First Clip? Or using the Add feature to produce a custom clip with 24 mbps as a permanent template?

You can create a file that way, but the supplied presets for AVCHD are limited to 18 mbps. That is also the limit if you use the burning modules to produce an AVCHD disc. If you want to produce a disc at 24 mbps it seems that you have to use blue ray.

Btw, you can use the same method to produce a 24 mbps clip in VS X2 as well.

Blu-ray is OK up to 35mbs,but I want short movies on cheap hybrid DVD's, which are also more reliable than the BD-R versions. B.t.w. VSX2 uses mpeg2, not mpeg4 which results in huge files. Both are of course belonging to the BD standards.

I believe the limitation is the technology used in DVD discs as opposed to BD discs. While AVCHD can support 24 mbps, DVD technology apparently doesn't.

I don't think that the DVD media as such is the limiting factor. Once it can be rotated fast enough (3x the 8000kbs speed) by the BD player, it will output 24mbs through the red laser system in the BD player. Maybe the player doesn't accept the high rotational speed (not needed for the much denser BD media). The higher datarate could not be a problem either for the BD circuits to process (BD goes much higher, also for the AVC/VC1 data). Once I get my 24mbs camcorder I will do some tests. Maybe a 24mbs AVCHD file with VSX2 in "the same as first clip" mode (like Ken suggested) will be possible and will result in a playable on my PC/multimediaplayer, if not I will need to use Edius5.1.. For burning I will have to use something else I think...TBD

Doesn't matter, you cant burn a AVCHD disc with VS any higher than 18 mbps.

Hmmmm... File size can be calculated from bitrate and playing time .... A 24mbps (average) MPEG-2 file is the same size as a 24mbps (average) MPEG-4 file.

Right. But in order to keep the same PQ as what you get from the original AVCHD(mpeg4) file, you need to double the bitrate when an mpeg2 (re)compression is being applied. So I used 35 kbps for my 16kbs AVCHD file. A 24kbs file would need about 50kbs in mpeg2. Moreover, an extra transcoding step is not advisable w.r.t. PQ. All by all I was not so happy to notice thatVSX2 creates mpeg2 files out of AVCHD footage in the BD burning module. I would have tought that it would have used my native AVCHD file for BD folders.

Hi everyone,
I just found out on the Corel Your Way forum site that Corel has added the increase of the video data rate to the User Request list for VideoStudio Pro X5. The reason for not putting this into the current product were not made clear, but I am a bit disappointed that they could not get it into VS X4. Perhaps it is too close to the new product release date for them to include it in a Service Pack 2 scenario.
As I have seen several threads regarding this subject on the Board, I wanted to let everyone know what is happening regarding this subject.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully they will use the even more recent new maximum of 27 Mbps, as well as true 50/60p for 1920 x 1080 video. I also requested the latter during the beta process for X4 but was told at the time by Corel that not enough users had the then new 50/60p camcorders which were strating to appear on the market.

Hi Ken,
I have been in touch with Corel Your Way again and stated my disappointment that a feature that I firmly believe should have been included with VideoStudio Pro X3 is being delayed until X5. I don't like having to pay for this functionality in the next upgrade, when it should already be there. I was told that my displeasure would be passed along to the Development Team, and maybe, if they recieve enough complaints, this feature might be added to VS X4 in another Service Pack.
So, I am letting all interested users who read this thread know about this. They can decide if they want to make Corel aware of their interest in 24 Mbps video data rate rendering, or not.
Thanks,

I have told people in the past here to complain directly to Corel as well. And while it should be for *at least* 24 Mbps, as I said above. The latest change to the international standard has raised the max bitrate for AVCHD to 27 Mbps for 1920 x 1080 50/60p and 3D video. So I think we should go for broke on this. But like you, I think it somewhat silly of Corel not to be seizing the bull by the horns and producing a products which is up with the latest standard, rather than having to dragged kicking and screaming to it by consumer complaints...
