Wonky video with lossless codec

Post by Ryan »

Hello all, I have some videos that I made with desktop screen recording software (Camstudio) and would like to edit them in VideoStudio 9.
I have had no problem doing this in the past, but ever since I changed the codec that Camstudio captures in to "CamStudio Lossless Codec v1.4", the video in VideoStudio becomes wonkey.

Strangely the video is fine if you play it within VideoStudio without any edits, but becomes wonky once you save it or preview it.
It's displayed correctly when played in Windows Media Player and I can also successfully edit it in Windows Movie Maker, the only reason why I choose not to is because of the lack of output options in this editor.

I've also tried another lossless codec for capturing (Lagarith lossless codec) which gives the same problem.

Any help is much appreciated.

Do you not have the "TechSmith" Codec?

No, I've just installed it though using the link you provided and get a message saying that I need a registered version of their "Camtasia" software in order to use the encoding side of this codec.

I've download/installed the free Camstudio 2.0, and am running some tests with it, and VS9. So far I've not replicated your issue. I've rendered one file using the same codec as you, and using the Same as first video clip option in the Share>Create Video file. I also used MPEG-2, customized it using 16:9, 720x480, frame rate of 30fps. I simply can not replicate your wonky issue. Here's a sample:

A problem with screencapture is that you need to stay as close to the original capture size as possible. When you drastically change the frame sizes, it can cause severe loss of quality. Just for the fun of it, I took the same screen capture into VS X3, and rendered it to a Hi-Def wide-screen format. I'll edit this post and include it, when it becomes available..

Here's the link to the Hi-Def version.. If you can not view it, wait a while as it may not be done processing..

Thanks for taking the time to do some tests Ron.
This leads me to believe that there is something wrong with my system configuration and that it's not a fault with VideoStudio.
Luckily I have a spare computer lying around which I could get up and running with VideoStudio to make sure it's not my video files or my CamStudio settings.

It does seem strange though that this only occurs within VideoStudio and other video editors can open it correctly.
I suppose I could just use a different video editor for all my desktop screen recordings, but I know my way around VideoStudio 9 and prefer using it.
Also I don't like to be beaten by a problem.

I think I've found the problem.
All of my Camstudio recordings were captured at odd resolutions such as 767x508.
When doing more test captures I changed the recording resolution to the default which is 320x240.
These videos worked fine in VideoStudio and had no wonky issue.

This must mean VideoStudio can't deal with odd resolutions and may only accept standard resolutions.
I'll have to edit my current captures in another video editor and will make sure I capture in a standard resolution in future.
