Video Studio Movie Import

Post by vinniel21 »

We're trying to use Video Studio to import video from a tape in a Sony DCR-VX2100 camera. It will import about 12 minutes out of an hour's worth, and then quit. The next time it will import another 12 minutes and quit. We have disabled all the power options to prevent hibernation and shutting off the monitor.

We are using Windows XP Pro.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Forums!

Unfortunately, a lot of things seem to have gone wrong with DV capture since Corel in their wisdom changed the capture plug-in with VS11 and subsequent versions. Most of us with mini DV cameras and Sony Digital 8s have simply used the work-around of using another program for capture, namely either Windows Movie Maker (making sure it is set to capture in DV and not WMV format) or a small freeware program called WinDV (windv.mourek.cz). The latter is a no-nonsense program which merely captures DV over firewire, and splits it by scene.

Oh, and I assume you *are* connecting the camera via Firewire...?

Sorry Accolades, I disagree about your shouted recommendation of updated system. Several people choose to stick with WinXP or just can't afford the big high-power systems and OSs.

Moreover, I first started using VS7 on an ancient Pentium III machine with a 20 GB hard drive and 512 MB RAM running Windows ME, and it worked perfectly for importing and and editing DV via Firewire...

I don't know exactly what format you are using to import the video vinniel21 , but it could be that your hard drive is formatted to the FAT32 system which will only allow a maximum file size of 4Gb - normal DV would be around 13Gb per hour so 12 mins should only be 2.5 Gb but as I say it does depend on what you are actually importing and windows stops the import when the file size reaches 4Gb - you could check the size of the file created on import.

have a look at this Microsoft article on how to convert a FAT32 system to an NTFS system :-

Thanks, people, for all of your replies. I think that we found the cause. We're on a corporate network that locks the computer and brings up a login box after a period of inactivity. We found that tranferring stops when the login box displays, so the solution seems to be that someone is detailed to move the mouse occasionally. We have asked our IT department to set the account not to display the box. Crazy.
