Hi AdotC
Welcome to the Forum
An FLV is a video streaming file and cannot be imported into the Video Studio timeline. Not sure where you read the above but if you go to File, Insert Media to Timeline then click, inser Video File then click the Files of type drop down menu a full list of supported files will be revealed. FLV will not be there.

As Mitchell pointed out VS is not able to edit FLV files, however you can render to FLV. You will need to convert the FLV file to one that VS accepts, this is dependent on what your end target is. Are you wanting to burn a DVD, or just for viewing on your PC or uploading to the net? If you Google for video converter you will find numerous hits..
Google Results for Video Converter

Also the drop-down menu when inserting video files does have FLV as an option, however VS does not allow inserting streaming files..
