TV safe area for plasma and LCD TVs

Post by jparnold »

I have read many posts on this but have yet to find an answer to my question.

I note that the TV Safe area can be adjusted for the editing stage but recently when authoring (share - create disk) I noticed that it can be adjusted at this point (using preferences - advanced) also.
I wondered why one would want to adjust it at this point and then wondered if in fact it can be adjusted so that the amount of video lost around the edges is adjustable - I don't think so (see following paragrapgh) but thought I would ask anyway. If someone please advise why it is adjustable during authoring. When authoring is the output picture resized at all?

According to Wikipedia there are two 'safe' areas - the action safe area and the title safe area and that plasma and lcd flat panels show most of the picture OUTSIDE the safe areas so it would appear that the 'TV safe' area is almost redundant when creating movies for exclusive use on those types of TV - is this correct?

For the most part, yes it is correct. With the LCD/Plasma TVs, the old CRT television safe areas are mostly obsolete. Your computer monitor can show you this. Create a short video that has some title placed outside the Title-safe zone, and play it on your PC. You should be able to see that misplaced title. However if you play this on an old CRT television, it will probably be cut-off.

So if you're used to placing titles just above the bottom title-safe line in VS, and you create a DVD that is played on a LCD television, that title will look a little odd, out of place. With those you can place the title at about the bottom of the preview screen.

Bear in mind that you might be handing out copies of your masterpieces to others who still use old technology.
Despite the modern day flat screen TV I would err on the side of safety in case a friend/relative/customer decides to watch it on a portable CRT television.

Thanks Steve
I wished you hadn't used the word 'masterpiece' as now my expensive leather bushmans hat doesn't fit anymore.
Anyone have use for a size 61cm leather hat?
Thank goodness my baseball type 'one size fits all' still fits.
BTW I downloaded the trial version of X3 but could see how to use 'moving path'. Isn't the 'NewBlue' effect/filter included with the trial version?

It's called PiP (picture in picture), and found in the New Blue Video Essentials II folder.

Thanks Ron
I did see PIP and had a look at it but could not work out how to use it maybe because I am 'coming from' v10+ and have not seen v11 or X2.
From what I did see though it doesn't seem as easy to use as Moving Path in MediaStudio.
I looked for a user guide but could not find one either in the folder containing the installation or at Corel's web site.
Is there a user guide?

In the Corel Guide (little circle of dots with the down arrow), click on the Vimeo, at the bottom, then the link provided in the text to take you to Corel's video tutorials on Vimeo for VS X3. There are several there, but click on the link below to take you to a specific one about New Blue PiP FX filter:
